Daily Driver 3RZ 4Runner Build

Tranny is out. Got it down to a science at this point lol. Less than 2 hours start to finish. Do something like 10 times and you're bound get good at it.

This was nice looking fluid around 10K miles ago.

I don't remember it being the "Shimmer Shine" version...

Look at the massive chunks the plug caught. I really want to pull apart the tranny and see the carnage inside. Maybe I will if I can overcome my laziness.

All ready to go out after an hour flat solo.

New trans getting picked up tomorrow. Probably slammed in real quick like.

Breaking news: My transmission died in a spectacular fashion on my way home tonight. Dropped from 1st to 2nd and completely ****ed something. I have no first or reverse and it's making a whole lot of noise. Probably related to whatever was knocking around in there last summer, but it made it's return really noticeable lol.

If something's gonna break, I always prefer it goes out with a bang!

Will be picking up my new trans Sunday and slapping it in.

LOL, thats what happens when you switch gears at 4500rpm!
Take it down to 3500 on the new one will ya! LOL :high5:

While you're slamming it in real quick like, don't forget to lube up the clutch fork's pivot ball real good... My truck has a clutch job not so long ago and the mechanics forgot that parts. It was a PITA trying to get grease in there with the tranny installed.

I can imagine lol, that's trying to do the first step last.

Almost back together, gonna wait till tomorrow to finish up, need gear oil and I would rather pay for 5 gallons instead of getting 5 quarts for the same price.

The grimy 200$ semi sketchy unknown everything W59 and T-case in all it's glory.

Slammed back in real quick. probably 3 and a half hours workin on it overall. This is actually the first time we've ever used our recently purchased high lift tranny jack for this. It's so much better than shouldering these things.

It's working great, only problem so far was a stuck reverse light switch. If that's the worst I get on a shady 200$ craigslist deal, that's awesome in my book.

And I forgot to post about this...

This is the perfect solution for running catless without throwing a code. Give that rear O2 sensor all the air it could ever want for the cost of a zip tie. (What 120$ O2 simulator lol?)

Bad day today, found out the transfer case that came with the new transmission had a bad bearing. The hard way. Went to use 4WD since it was a bit icy out and got up to about 30. The Tcase locked up and a skidded all 4 tires a good 20 feet. Thought it was all good and came home and slapped the other Tcase on it.

That wasn't bad enough though... When the tires locked up it took out something in my rear diff. Sounds like a freight train. Damn... Need this thing up and running by Sunday. Might have to throw in the 4.56 rear I have laying around and live the 2WD life till I can figure it out.

Took out 15 teeth on the ring gear and every tooth on the pinion. I can't explain how violently the transfer case locked up when this happened. We all know how beefy these 8" R&P's are. Found a factory set of 4.88's locally within price range. Back on the road again tomorrow night.

Sorry to hear about the recent misfortune!
Awesome you found an OEM 4.88 locally [emoji1360]

What's the "major rethinking" you mentioned?!

Shit happens. Don't want to get into any major details quite yet, but it's gonna be shifting into territory most people here wouldn't venture towards.

All back together, no strange noises, no strange movements. Finally back to perfecting the turbo setup. Just in time for the toy drive tomorrow too. Hopefully it'll be a while before I have to work on the turd again...

It's pretty damn cold out and we've actually gotten some winter weather! I've been doing a lot of drifting in the turd, she's fun on the slick stuff once the turbo spools up.

Step one of my re-imagining is this. Found the set of wheels I wanted from the start but was too cheap to buy. Very slight compromise on the color, but I can get them powdercoated eventually. New tires on Friday hopefully.

(Konig Countersteer Type X, 17x8 -10.)

I'm going to be going for more of what I had imagined when I first got my 4Runner, combined with the knowledge I've picked up along the last few years.

The turbo's been making the most out of this nice cold, dense air. I actually found a completely dry length of pavement to do a pull, here's a quick video of all she's got. Getting the Toyos moving definitely slows my 0-60, but 10 seconds is wayyy faster than she'd ever do stock. (Last I checked it was 17 seconds on the lighter BFG's)
