Dang tire pressure monitoring system

I own an '04 SR5 V8. When I bought the truck, I thought it *didn't* have the tire pressure monitoring system. I thought it came only on the Sport and Limited. I found out last week I was wrong. The light started flashing. This was after I mounted new snow tires on conventional rims/valves.

After going through the various threads on the system, I concluded that the problem must be the spare since it appears that the conventional valves on the new wheels don't send out a low-pressure signal. The spare was around 29 psi so I topped it up to 32. Drove around for the weekend and the light has not gone out. Annoying to have a flashing warning light on a nearly new vehicle.

Can anyone confirm how the tire pressure monitoring system works with non-compliant valves? That is, if the valve on the tire does not have a pressure sensor, does that mean the system detects a low pressure condition or does it assume that the pressure is okay?

From what I have read about the system, it is looking for a signal from 5 sensors. If any of the sensors reports low or is not reporting, the system will flash and alert you to a potential problem (and generally annoy the crap out of the driver until it is replaced).

If you don't mind me asking, what Winter Rims are you using on your 4Runner?

I have ordered an 05 Limited V8 and I am looking for my options for Winter Rims and Tires here in Ottawa.

i changed the rims/tires too... and have the same problem.... they told me at the dealer that im just gonna have to live with it.. or take the valves from the original tires and installed them on the new rims.. but too much work with unmountin n moiuntin.. so im just copin with it. my light does not go on all the time. just sometimes. i guess it resets itself when i turn off/on the truck.

MacVay, I bought BF Goodrich Winter Slaloms in 245 75/16 size. They are marginally smaller in diameter than the stock tires but they are narrower and theoretically, better for deep snow.

The rims I bought were Toyota steel rims from the dealer. They were only $80 each. Not bad for a dealer item. If you buy them, make sure you get the 75 cent lug nuts and not the $8.00 ones (I was originally offered).

I bought the centre caps from Hub Cap Heaven in Ohio. $60 USD for all four.

For specific part nums, etc., do a search for a thread I started that has the word "Northerners" in it. I'm too lazy to search it myself right now.
