Dash Click/Rattle

We have snow and ice in Portland and the WD 40 just wore off. I will give the silicone a shot for round 2. I wanted to start with crap I knew would wear off to make sure it was the problem area. Thanks and have fun when you get some snow up there. I have been out driving in the snow for no reason for the past 6 hours....4runner weather.

Is anyone experiencing a rattle coming form the CENTER of the dash? Mine seems to be coming from dead center right below the windshield. If i push on the dash right above the display for the clock, temp, etc. and push towards the windshield it seems to reduce it. This one just showed up the other day and I get the feeling it might be hard to track down.


For the people with the rear seat squeak, I"m not sure if your problem is the same as mine but I had similar squeaking from both the rear seats and the liftgate on both of my past 4runner's. The only simple fix I ever came up with was to wrap the latch piece in electrical tape. Worked like a charm on my 93, my 96 and now my 2011.

I did it to mine but used silicon spray lubricant instead of wd40 and no noise since. That is definitely the problem area where the noise is coming from. Its been 3 days and temps in the 20's here in Seattle.

where exactly did you spray the silicon? I sprayed it on the bottom black tirm next to the windshield but had to rub it off because I didn't want to stain the tirm white (maybe I got the wrong type of silicon). It helped some but the noise was there but reduced.

I sprayed using a can with a straw. Between the top of the rubber seal and the windshield at the bottom of he windshield. not sure if it will last but been 5 days now and no creak. I wiped off the excess and pinched the tip of the straw inside the seal. No staining.

2015 TRDpro here and also having a click coming from the passenger dash below the windshield- i think. It only occurs over bumps or whenever the body is slightly torqued like taking a quick left to right at 20mph.

Anyone else notice this on their Pro?

I found my rattle!!!
I pulled the plastic cowl off where the wipers are to see if the rattle was a rock or something, and I found that it was clean as a whistle. But since I had it apart I figured check everything, I found that the wire that comes off of the wiper defroster connects to a gray clip (passenger side) and when I wiggled it, there was my rattle click sound. I pulled it off and zip tied it back on. Over a month now and no rattle. Hope this helps some of you all that still searching

I believe I have narrowed it down to the passenger side near the windshield/dash. My '08 Tundra had a similar issue and it was the cowl tapping against the glass. I want to tackle it this weekend. How difficult was it to pull off the wiper cowl? I have a new '16 and there has been a rattle since day one and 5 miles on the odometer. I believe I have narrowed it down to the passenger side near the windshield/dash. My '08 Tundra had a similar issue and it was the cowl tapping against the glass. I want to tackle it this weekend. Same here on my 16 LE. I took a few pictures. I zip-tied the black piece in the picture. No more noise.

I'm about to wash the mud and dust off the 4r, and I hope to take the cowl off afterward to see if this is the same noise I've been having since day one. it sounds like a tapping on the lower passenger side windshield. The more I go offroad, the more racket it seems to make.


Any tips for removing the cowl? I have trim removal tools

Remove the windshield wipers
Remove the clips that hold hold the plastic cowl driver and passenger side.
Then start pulling the cowl.

it's pretty straightforward

The piece that holds the connector doesn't look like it should even go where its installed. Poorly designed piece.

It was about 2 C 35F outside this morning. I had a creaking noise from the cowl. To make the noise go away I wiggled the cowl a few time. The noise seem go away after that. The road I was on was really rough.

It came off and back on very easily. 2 pins and the remaining clips weren't stubborn in either proceedure.

I put a 1" piece of 3m VHB tape under the black plastic piece.

Mine came back too. I took the cowl off for an inspection, and the sound was gone again for a good long while. Then it returned... again

I think the cowl might be the problem, or the trim piece in the lower passenger windshield that touches the cowl.

I was hoping that squirrly plastic piece was the answer. Just the same, I used a piece of hose and a tie-wrap, and The bracket is removed. So I can at least eliminate that.

I think I finally heard this "rattle" everyone talks about, I turned down the radio and could faintly hear something. I will probably never look for this illusive noise, my daily work vehicle is a 1 ton van with every nut, bolt, and fastener you could want, also every single noise you could ever imagine, chirping, rattling, and squeaking coming from the cargo area. The toyota is a church mouse in comparison. Unless the mouse starts a terrible rock band, I'll leave em be.
