Daytime Running Lights

When you installed it, did you disconnect the battery? The dealer disconnected mine and when I got it back, my auto windows (driver and rear) wouldn't work. Then my service guy drove it to the back, and it worked w/o him dropping it off to the techs in the back. He said that you should just play with the switch and the system will go back to normal. :

He normalized the windows auto up/down feature and one touch moonroof (if you have one) open and close.

Change relay but the dashboard

I replaced the relay on my 2007 4Runner SR5 to enable the DRL. When I started up the car, the turn signal light (daytime running light) doesn't comp up. Once I switch the gear and move, it turns on automatically.

Somehow, the dashboard light is on even with the light swith on 'off' position. Is it normal?

The DRL's only come on after you release the parking brake.

Yes, the dash lights are supposed to be on even with the light switch in the off position. When you turn on the lights, a green light bulb should illuminate within the gauge cluster to let you know your lights are on.

Thank you for your replies. I can relax now.

Wife called me when she got back to office telling me the the dashboard light is on. And, I don't remember how it was before I replaced the relay. So, I told her I would post a question on this forum. I didn't expect I can get the answer so quickly.

They are ON on either version with or without DRL.

Guys,
I am attempting to do the same mod on my 05 4runner as it did not come with DRL's I removed the old relay (small beige one) and put in the DRL relay Larger black/dk Brown one and I still do not have DRL's. I did note that it was said that I do not need the upgraded dimmer and sensor for that to work. (any insight as to why that is not working would be great.) I am going to add the Sensor and the upgraded dimmer switch for the auto headlights as well and add the mod to turn off the DRL's when I want to have them off using a dash mounted switch. Hate being half way there..... Ideas??

Okay now I feel dumb now. The 4runners DRL's are the side marker lights, those are on and working as advertised, now I have to finish it if I want the auto day lights.
When I was at the dealership they indicated that I would have a different indication, reading the forums I found that what I got was exactly what I should get. That being said I am ordering the rest of the parts....

DRL mod disabled auto power window and headlight time-out

O.K. I installed the DRL relay on my 2006 4-runner SR5. The DRL function worked as advertised. However, I noticed that:

1. My auto power window on the driver side no longer worked
2. The factory headlight timeout also was disabled (in case you left the lights on and forgot about it).

Does anyone have any additional information on this issue? It's a hard trade-off to have DRL and no auto-power window.

I noted (either here or elsewhere) that other features were disabled as well. My truck used to auto lock after a certain interval, ( I remember because I would hear it beep while out in the Garage) Does the ECU "relearn" that as well? I did the relay swap and it has relearned the auto window function and the auto lamp off after 30 seconds. I need to do a better test on the auto lock feature. is the interval for that 30 seconds as well?

*** Update*** It appears that everything was relearned on my drive to work today. I have working DRL's and it all appears to be great.

Thanks for all the great info provided. Had I read the entire thread fro start to finish I would have had a MUCH better Idea on what to expect.

You did remove the small adapter cable when you removed the the old relay and installed the new one right?? The small cable disconnects from both the old relay and the main cable. Then you connect the main cable to the new DRL Relay. Once done you need to start up the engine and play with the windows (up and down etc so that the ecu will relearn the commands. I did not wait long enough and got a little panicky....:gun6:

thanks for the reply, so if i do that, then i should have the white end of the new relay plugged into the main wire and then the gray end just hangs there and isnt connected to anything?
When i do that, the flasher lights dont even work (when i press the emergency button)

well i figured out my problem and for anyone else with an 08 4runner.
Do you not need the wiring harness, just the flasher (relay) is fine.

Proof positive seek and ye shall find! I ordered my 04 and did not opt for the DRL option. I remember asking the dealer if they could be added and they said no... So I let it go til I found this forum tonight! Ordered my relay!!

DRL Resistor Value

Hi guys,
I would like to put the high-beams on my first gen runner on double-duty as Daytime Running Lights (Might as well put high beam filament to use because it's often still good when low beam filament goes out, right?). Need to connect a resistor in series with high beam circuit to reduce power when in DRL mode.
If you guys have DRLS that use a resistor, may I ask what value is the resistor? TIA

I know this is a blast from the past, but still has interest...

This is NOT the way my 2003 Limited acts. I don't have ANY dash lights with just DRLs, nor do I have a green light (or other colored light for that matter) related to the headlamps being on. Just the blue indicator for the brights.

My DRLs are factory. Only mod I did was the DRL delete, which I de-modded (cut the DRL input wire to the relay assembly, but had a switch in between to toggle on & off). I have since removed the switch, and respliced the wire back together so it operates as normal (so I thought).

Does everybody have their dash lights come on with the DRLs? If your parking brake is set are the dash lights off until you take the brake off? This is just very strange to me. I don't know why mine would be different from everybody elses. My dash lamps work when I turn on the parking lights & headlamps, that's the only time though.

On my 04 the DRL's stay on til the headlights come on. So yes, you can run parking lights and DRL's.

Daylight Running lamp replacement

Hello everybody:

I hope that my question is not too much of a digression from the main topic but I was hoping to find a thread that would help me replace a burnt out Daytime running lamp on my daughter's 2002 4Runner Sport Edition. I have looked ate the fixture and removed a small screw atop it but the thing refused to budge. I stopped at that juncture as I did bot not want to break anything ere to continue pulling and tugging at it.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how I could replace this bulb.

The 03 model 4Runners do not have instrument backlighting unless the parking lights or headlights are on. Due to the deep set gauge design the instruments can be hard to see in certain conditions. A lot of complaints from owners resulted in Toyota issuing a TSB to dealers with instructions on how to jumper the instrument backlighting to be always on with the ignition. I remember reading it and it shows how to jumper the 12v from the ignition to the backlight wire and voila you have always on backlights on your gauges. This was corrected in the 04 and later models. Just do a search and you will find it here...
