Dealer Service -- $80 Mobil 1 Upgrade?

I called the dealer about taking my 4R in for the 5k oil change. I was told that the scheduled maintenance included synthetic oil, but that there was an $80 upgrade charge for Mobil 1. Not only is this a huge markup on the oil itself, but it also doesn't reflect the difference between the oil I would have gotten for free and the Mobil 1.

Have any of you had a similar experience?

The Mobil1 'upgrade' from your dealer should be around the $30-$40 price range. The $per/quart price should be about $4.25 or what you would pay at Walmart for a 5 quart jug, which I use as my baseline for Mobil1 oil prices.

Also, I did the something similar with the Rav4 for the first free maintenance service (ie. glorifed oil change), and our dealer does not provide a credit for the convential dino oil that you are not taking. If they did, it would only work out to about $6 anyway.

Your dealer is trying to rip you off. There is no way that 6 1/2 quarts of 0w-20 from Mobil1 is going to cost $80. The per quart price from my local parts department is only $8.99, $6.25/quart if I buy it by the case. The dealer is most certainly getting it for cheaper than that, and any synthetic they are using comes from Mobil1, no matter what the generic label says.

This seems like a "blinker fluid and muffler bearings" service department, I'd not use them.

My dealer charged me $39.00 for my 5K oil change (0-20w) including a tire rotation.
