The first order of business is to address any maintenance, and known or unknown issues. I want to put some miles on it, and make sure everything is in good working order before I modify anything. There's also several little things I would like to take care of.
Then, if I get my way, I would like a small lift (around 2") and some slightly bigger AT tires (maybe 265/75). And, some SCS F5 wheels in matte gunmetal would sure look sweet!
I have a ton of idea's floating around in my head, I just don't know how far I want to go with it. I'll probably make a separate build thread for it, just to keep things separate and more organized for future reference.

What kind of mpg's you getting in the '99?

Not good, maybe around 16mpg highway, on a good day.
But, I have mountain passes in every direction of me. And the thing was never built with mileage being a consideration. I've only calculated it a few times and I've decided it's better if I don't know or even keep track of it.

serious? i constantly run 17 city highway mix. highway i run a flat 19-20. thats at 70 mph too.
ok [MENTION=67615]Dirtco[/MENTION] question. where did you get your rear tire carrier? i know its probably in your build thread somewhere but damn i dont ahve enough time to look through all 78ish pages. also why the hell is the tire up so high! if mine was that high i wish i never had a flat. i would hate trying to raise that tire up that high.
but i am in the market for a rear tube like yours... what page is that info on?

Just checking in. Great seeing lots of wheeling pics. Love the new runner, that blue is my favorite color I'm sure you will probably keep it mild but dirtco it and make it cool.

Yeah, that's on a real good day. I'm closer to 12-14 on a day to day basis.

As TCMach said, I made them. The spare tire is up high because I didn't want the tongue of my camping trailer to hit it while out on the trail, I also didn't want to drag it on anything while wheeling. It limits my view out the back window, but they all do. As for getting the tire up there, it's quite easy to get the spare on there (it's only a 255 on an aluminum wheel). If I have to throw one of my beadlocks on it that could be a different story, but I'll make it work.

Whewh! I FINALY got through all 75 pages, along with a trailer thread and a "Mild build" thread. So much good info. Your rig is fantastic! Thank you for posting all this! It makes me think I need to get out more in my own "mild" 4runner more in this great state.
Thanks for all the inspiration Dirtco. I will be refering back often as I move forward with bumpers and sliders on my rig (and also for wheeling ideas).

I know I know I'm responding to a 90 yr old post, but I am only now discovering Dirtco's build.
He is right that is an OLD Snapon welder. I believe it is manufactured by a company named CK Systematics. They were a captive supplier for a while I believe, but I don't know if they are still a supplier. I owned one for 20 yrs until I sold my shop and it stayed behind, still working great. Snap on sold rebadged Century welders, not Lincolns. Pretty sure the one I saw in one of the pictures is a CK though. I worked for Snapon in the 90's and we loved those things. I work for Snap on now, but I don't sell welders.

I've been dying to get out in the 4Runner, but the snow is too deep for snow wheeling (until the spring warm up), and the weather has been crappy on all of my days off. I'm also working weekends at my new job (until the ski area's close), so all my friends are working when I'm off... lame.
After seeing the weather forecast yesterday I decided to make a solo trip down to BV and run one of my favorite trails, Chinaman Gulch. The weather was perfect for this time of year (55 and sunny), and while this might not be the best trail to run solo I've run it enough times to know what I was getting myself into.
It took me less than two hours to run the whole trail, and that was with me playing with the GoPro, and taking my time. I only saw two hikers the entire trip.
Got to the bottom of the trail and decided to play around on the entrance to Carnage Canyon, for old times sake!
