Damnit, you just had to say it! :D

I've been drooling over that set up for months, but unfortunately after adding all the parts up it's way out of my price range. The 4WU kit is the best out there and totally worth the money, but it adds up so fast! It would be one thing if you had a solid axle rig and most the parts, but when you have to buy everything scratch it gets stupid expensive!

I'm still working out the details, but it will be a Toyota based axle. My main goal is strength and reliability. I don't have a diesel tow rig and I like to drive my rig on the street, so I will be sticking with 37" tires.

I hear you on the cost - geez it adds up fast.

I am leaning toward keeping my eyes open for an already built and in good shape front complete with steering arms and then swap parts to a TG rock assault housing already set up for a 3 link. Then figure out what brackets to get.

Can someone confirm this is the correct way to replace a starter on a 99 4Runner? :D

Pretty sure you're doing it right. Those damn starters are so much work. Excited to see where this goes!

Curious as to what welder you use for all of your fab projects

ahhh....the way Toyota should have built it. :) Good luck. I've debated cutting off the stock frame front section as you did vs. leaving it in tact. Biggest problem is uptravel with low ride height....which is why most people cut it in the first place. Problem is the A/C compressor sits so low on the 3.4L that it limits you anyway. I looked into moving it to a new location....I'd rather swap in a new power steering pump lower anyway to get the reservoir feeding above it (going full hydro on mine)....but that may not be doable. Will have to wait and see once I have all my parts.

You are going to be so happy. After owing a SAS rig I will tell you this. It's will change how you look at 4x4 forever. Next, Over Axle it and under power it. I say this because I never had a issue with breaking shit on my rig and I wheeled it pretty hard at times and always drove it. home. People were shocked. If you are going to do a Taco box now is the time also. Big big thing. GET GOOD GEARS DUDE! Do not go on the cheap on that shit, same with the axle too. I'll be watching out and seeing how it comes along.

I'm going to say you probably didn't have to remove the bumper, but the rest looks right to me.

Opening this thread makes me feel like I won front row tickets to a sold out concert or something.

I debated it too, but I have a 1" body lift that I can't get rid of (without rebuilding my sliders, rear bumper, and removing my aux fuel tank). By building my own frame I can lift the engine an inch and get the frame rails as high as possible. It also gives me a nice level and flat surface to work with, with thicker material.

Oh, and I hate grinding! :)

Yeah, before this 4Runner I had a couple of pretty built solid axle rigs. When I first built this truck it was my daily driver and I only had two parking spots at my condo. As I progressed into a house with a garage my 4Runner has gotten more built and wheeled harder. I debated selling it and starting over, but I just like it too much! It's comfortable and great to camp out of. I don't even mind the IFS that much on the trail, it's just the reliablity factor and replacing the same parts over and over.

Go man go! Watching this while I am gathering parts. Sort of wishing I had done the axle swap before or at the same time as dual cases so I could do a passenger-drop axle.
