DIY Complete AC Replacement on 2000 T4R Limited

So I did wind up replacing the evaporator, which was good since the old one was pretty grody, and I think it was leaking around the expansion valve (also replaced). I got the system recharged today, and the compressor wouldn't engage. Turns out when your AC clutch goes out, it will blow the corresponding fuse, which is good to know.

Anyways the AC now works, but it's not as cold as it used to be. The ambient temperature when I measured today was 101*F, and the temp at the center vent was 68*. That's at idle in my driveway, which is a hell of a lot better than nothing, but it used to be low 50's high 40's. My moms highlander was putting out 51* when checked right next to the 4runner.

All said and done I added about 7oz of oil to the system replacing the compressor, evap, condenser, and drier. Too much? Anyone got any ideas how I can make it colder?

I did check for leaks, and there's no bubbles in the sight glass, and nothing showing up with the UV light. I think my manifold is leaking so I'm a little hesitant to hook it up, but I probably should hook up a manifold and see the pressures.

Do yo have access to ac manifold set with gauges? If you do check your pressures at 1500 rpm. Low side should be 20-35 psi and high side should be 200-230 psi. Those are for ambient temps at 86-95 *F so if you're above that then your readings will likely be higher. Also ac on, temp set as cold as possible, fan on high, recirculate on, and all vents open.

Compressor manifold to compressor bolts torque specs

Both suction hose and discharge hose should be 7 ft lbs.

I have the same question, but are you taking about suction and discharge hose where they bolt onto the manifold is 7 ft lbs? I need manifold to compressor specs. Anyone?

The parts list in this thread was super helpful! Adding my 2024 costs for anyone facing the replacement on a 1997 4Runner. I turned this one over to the pros. Just under $1000 all in with me providing the parts. Parts saved a couple hundred plus I used all OEM (Denso everything except the belt).

• (Toyota via Amazon) Receiver Drier: $51.31
• Memphis Auto Repair & Service (great shop, would use again): $572.90 ($450 labor + $72 Freon & PAG Oil + tax)

Total: $978.95

25 years on the original parts, fingers crossed for the next 25 but I’ll be happy if I get 10.

The Denso evaporator is no longer available. Which one do you guys recommend?

That stinks. What are your options? I've had some AC components from the brand 4 seasons. Not the condenser, but nothing has failed in the last 2 years.

I will explore 4 seasons evap option. Anybody else have any experience with this brand?
