Do I / Can I have factory keyless entry???

Okay. I did a little more research. The part I showed is '99-02. You guys seem to be all '98 or earlier. When I search on 'wireless' for a '98, nothing comes up; I can't kind a key fob, either. I can easily fing all that for '99+. So I'm guessing any '98 and earlier keyless entries are port/dealer added, and factory keyless started in 1999.


EDIT. I was right. There is sufficient confusion on this subject that Toyota put out two TSB's trying to get this straightened out and effed it up the first time. Here is the second one and should be useful to anybody with this issue-covers all Toyota's.

So the only TOYOTA system for '96-'98 was the RS3000 and its programming instructions are here:

This last confirms that the module was under the seat for '98 and prior. So if you don't have the module under the seat for '98 and earlier no keyless entry. '99 and after, look for the buzzer in my picture. Hope this helps. Sorry if I confused you guys with the early trucks.

Well crap, I just ordered the black one, and I need the gray one. Thanks for finding and posting this!

I ordered an aftermarket fob on ebay a few weeks back. They say its identical to the original as far as how it functions and programs. It was for the the VIP system code BAB237131-022. But I couldnt get it to work. So I call the company and tell them its not working, and the lady looks up my vin and says I didnt have a factory installed alarm/key fob. But its all there. So I told her it was probably installed new at the dealer. I knew it! This bullitin is my proof

This is all interesting for sure . If your <98 did NOT have the 3000 , anyone know if the harness is laying there under the seat ? Is it as easy as just buying it and plugging it in with the appropriate FOB ?

Mine used to have this box, I know because:

a) the PO told me he took it out when he installed the Remote Start system (Valet 561r). But he can't find it anywhere, or I would have it.
b) the wiring is there... Plus, I even have the pamphlet for it in my glove box!

I doubt it, that's from a 2nd gen. Try to find an RS3000, they are about $35ish on eBay.

Thats the same ECU I have. I dont know about the rear window option though. I know mine does not have that option. The key fob for mine only has the two buttons for lock and unlock. And that one came off a Camry, which obviously doesnt have an opening rear window. You will have to do some research. I think the rear window option came in 99 or 00.

If you have the wiring it will be very easy to find under the driver seat. Youll have three harnesses for the three slots on the ECU.

That's the fob and FCC ID I have on a '99 with factory keyless entry and no alarm. Does it also work with the RS3000 dealer/port installed alarm?? I tend to doubt it.

If i find an ECU in a junkyard and buy a remote online, is that all I need? are there any other parts that are needed to get the keyless entry to work?

Did you end up putting in the RS3000? Im thinking of buying the same unit. please keep me posted on how it is working out! I REALLY want the window button too!

I haven't done it but it certainly can be done on a '98. You just need to find a complete rs3000 somehwere. There is one on eBay right now:

On this one, would need to find the fobs, too.

All the '98's were port/dealer add-ons, so there really is no 'factory'system.

You cannot retrofit the '99+ factory system into a '98 because that system is integrated into the Body ECU and the Back Door ECU, which is wildly different from the '98 and would be a nightmare to rewire. You could not pay me enough to attempt it.

Just got a 2000 4runner last week and it didn't come with a fob, but it does have the security light on the dash so I was curious. I'm glad I saw this thread, I'm on the phone with the dealer right now (on hold... again) they've got a fob in stock and I'm scheduling to go down there. It'll be 160 for fob and programming... Does that sound right? Seems a little expensive but it is the dealership, and he said they need the Toyota computer to program because it has the alarm system and everything too. Either way it'll be nice to have keyless with alarm :hungry:

if you're ok with aftermarket i bought some on ebay and followed the guide in the sticky. ebay fob was about $20, the sequence was a little tricky but once i was in programming mode my fobs worked fine.

I might just do that. I went down there for my scheduled appointment after the service writer assured me the fob they had in stock is the correct one and the tech was set up to do it, it'd be quick, no problem. Well I waited an hour for the service writer to come get me and tell me the fob was incorrect and it wouldn't program. :redbrick: :redbrick: :redbrick:

I ordered one from Car and Truck Remotes in Atlanta. Used but in good shape $55 with new battery. Reprogrammed it myself with included instructions. They will assist over the phone also. Nice folks. They reclaim fobs from junk yards I guess. It was definitely OEM. Tried junk Chinese one from Ebay but never got it to work.
