Do I / Can I have factory keyless entry???

well now im gonna have to take a look around my truck. The PO rekeyed the locks at some point and did a real piss poor job of it, you have to have the key in at the right depth (which isn't all the way in) and jimmy it a little bit back and forth.

Just bought an OEM fob from a guy on eBay. $22, saved $140 over going to the dealership. I'll update when I get it and whether it programs or not.

Update: Got the fob, tried to get the truck to enter program mode... Can't. Tried three different procedures. First attempt (multiple times) was procedure from post #2 in this thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/7501-programming-instructions-keyless-entry-remote.html

2nd and 3rd procedures were from the options on this site: http://www.keylessride.com/

During the lock/unlock sequence the locks started slowing down like my battery was dying though, I dunno if that had something to do with it. I don't have the voltage tester here so I can't be certain of voltage. I don't have a load tester so can't test that.

I got the call that the dealer has the "correct" fob in, so I'll just take it down there and see what they say. I haven't given up yet.

Hey guys!
New to the forum and not sure how this whole thing works....
Maybe, hopefully, someone can tell me what's up with this beast...

My 4Runner came factory with the "engine immobilizer/anti theft system"
The thing goes off every chance it gets, every 5 minutes to an hour. No one seems to be trying to break in. Happens at home, at work, at the grocery store etc.

From what I understand there is no way to actually reset the system

I changed the battery in my clicker. Didn't help.
Check my battery terminals, they are tight, light corrosion which I cleaned off.
All the fuses seem fine as well.

Anyone have any idea what may be going on?

Researched and found this thread, having the same issue as some others. I've tried programming my remote multiple times, but I can't even get in to the "Programming Mode", much less the part where you actually pair the remote. Per this thread, I popped open the hood, and I do in fact have the buzzer type Denso thingy attached in the rear passenger side near the fire wall. I tried it both ways, turning ignition switch on/off once and twice.

Any ideas? What have I missed?

yeah I bought two remotes on ebay as well. The remotes aren't working and I got toyota guys to try. Also, my locks and ignition got rekeyed so I wonder if it will work without master key.

I haven't come across a 3rd gen yet that doesn't have keyless entry, just ones missing the fob.

How would I know if my 97 SR5 has the keyless entry hardware? Thanks.

There was no factory keyless entry in '97. It would only have keyless entry if it had the RS3000 alarm system dealer or port-installed. So look for any evidence of an alarm light or an alarm control box, usually under the driver seat.

In '97, no alarm, no keyless entry.

Hello Durk I am hoping you can help me out a bit I just purchased a 98 t4r. There is no box under the driver seat but I do have a security light on the dash. Is there another spot that the box could be? or should I just wing it and buy a fob and see what happens?

I'm not Durk, and didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I did recently go through a similar experience...

You'll have to find the control box in any case. I just bought 2 generic ebay fobs and did this myself - my 98 only came with a valet key and 1 nearly-broken fob, so I had to get more.

If you just buy a fob, it won't have any effect on the car until it's sync'd with the box (there's a green button recessed in one side of the RS3000 box, and you have to press that and the fob's lock button simultaneously to sync them, so the fob will work on the car).

I found info while searching for mine (which WAS under the driver's seat, but I didn't recognize it)...

In case you do find it, heads-up, there's multiple "sync" methods floating around. One has you turn on/off the key twice, then lock/unlock the doors 5x, etc... That never worked for me. Pressing the buttons at the same time did.

You could also have an aftermarket remote starter or security system that is connected to the light.

Mine came with an aftermarket remote start/alarm with a light but I only had the NON RS3000 remote door lock/unlock.

Thank you for the reply. I read though some of those threads and I will have to take a look and see if I can find that peizo thing in the engine bay or try to trace the wires off the security light. By my security light isnt near the parking brake handle but on the left side of the steering wheel near where the diff locker button would be.

I checked under the seat again and there is an amp for the sound system (which I will be removing) but I will check around there once I get it out after seeing the post about it maybe being under the carpet.

Like he said, the fob will do you no good if you have a box but can't find it. Since they were port/dealer added, they could literally be anywhere.

Gotcha because I wont be able to hit the button to program it. Now does the RS3000 have an option for the rear window roll up and down?

Since the original fob didn't have a button for that, I'm thinking "no", and a third party system would probably be the only way to get that feature.

Adding 1999-2002 OE Keyless Entry

I have a 1996 4Runner that came with the RS3000. The alarm was screwy to begin with coupled by the fact that I am not an RS3000 fan so I 86ed it and repaired (resheathed) the factory harness. I would like to add a factory installed keyless entry system from a 1999 - 2002 and I question what parts I'd need from the salvage yard.

Any help would be much appreciated. :thanks:

The '99+ system is completely integrated into the harness. It requires much more than you might be thinking... (all the stuff in the rear hatch, main body harness, the dash harness, fuse box(es), etc.)

I would suggest aftermarket...

I am actually in the process of doing the auto AC and diff locker conversion (down time while on leave). I have two wiring harness already. One from a 1997 and one from a 1999. I am just thinking before I button it up, that I may have the necessary harness wire - I would just need the appropriate modules.
