Hey folks, just pulled my 229,000 mile original radiator out for new one due to age only,no leaks,PO has had 5 coolant flushes done with red toyota coolant the only type it ever saw,I really want to know if corrossion is in tranny cooler or inside. I REALLY want to see the inside,DO YOU GUYS???? If so pics will come after the destruction happens!! I'll saw that bastartdo in two for science only, absolutely no fun will be had.:bounce:

I would like to see it!

This makes me want to cut my old one up too. Mine wasn't leaking/mixing either. We could compare results.

As the owner of a milkshake-immune 5-speed with 155k and 13 years also on a steady diet of red, I am VERY interested. I've run radiators for over 20 years on a Mercedes and an IH tractor, and I'm going to run this one until it dies, too. So what you find may be instructive.

brake the lower tank off so we can see the type of trans cooler it has. Its either a hollow brass tube or a fin and plate......I think

I just did this to my radiator!

Used a screwdriver and popped it off to see what's inside.

Don't want to steal the thread but mine had.....

Sorry... gotta give the OP a chance...he's probably busily sawing away and it's be kinda mean to have him come back in and someone beat him to it...

I'll post pictures after the OP has a chance to show his.

It's not a competition, we're all here to learn. Let's see what you got.

Ok It's all science right?

Hopefully the images appear.

I was quite surprised! I suspected MUCH more cooling, like rows or a tube looped through somehow...

Obviously even the smallest B&M provides much more surface area and this explains why folks are getting improved tranny cooling with by passing this little thing.

Also I'm unsure about the circulation. I drained the trans pan again today and it is slightly brown and thin when cool. The stuff that poured out of here was quite dark and thick. Took some time to drain out...

Sorry OP..hopefully this adds to the discussion.

LOL thats crazy, how small the stock trans cooler is.

but that cant be? it seems like a standalone unit in your photo and the reason for pink milkshake to occur is there is some sort of area where they should "link" up and only be separated by some sort of gasket/o ring/ something

A thing to keep in mind is that oil/trans coolers that use water/coolant as the cooling source instead of air are much smaller. With air you need a lot more surface area and airflow so they need to be bigger. So comparing the size of this to the air cooled B&M just by looks and size alone isn't conclusive. Now I am not saying it works better or worse, just saying that different kinds of coolers are different sizes.

Here are some high performance liquid oil coolers by C&R, see how small they are, very similar in size to our stock one...

Not sure how these work. A quick google found little to explain. While they maybe efective they are being "cooled" with 180°-200° water compared to even extreme 110° ambient T, not counting wind chill and surface area.

Just yesterday I was a strong advocate for NOT by passing this puny cooler (before I realized how puny it is!) Now I'm not so sure. I can't imagine it adding much to the cooling system in exchange for strawberry milkshakes...I just put in a new radiator and B&M in circuit... may try it with just the air cooled.

Is std. OBD II transmit trans T? I have an ELM transmitter and an iPhone but can't find an app that reads trans T...for less than $50...
