Ok guys. I'm putting this in the build thread because, well, its a build, damn it.
Some one double check my math on this; because, if I'm right, I just built a 45 GALLON TANK!!!!!
Here was my plan:
I wanted to keep as much of the OEM stuff as I could. So, I had to make the tank quite a bit deeper than I wanted to, but I think I did it in a very good way.
The length of the tank, front to back, is 24". The width of the tank, between the frame rails, is 35 7/8".
I'll explain this now....
The easiest way to figure out the volume of this tank was to break it down into basic shapes. Hence the areas 1, 2, and 3.
As I said before, I wanted to put the tank in the stock spare location. Well, If I were to do that, I would loose the ability to run the stock fuel pump. I really didn't want to loose that, and have to dump more momey into this tank. SO, what I did was make the tank drop behind the rear axle, and slope up to the frame rails. I figure the axle and tires will protect the long portion of the tank. The slope goes up to right inbetween the frame rails, so it'll be good and protected. I also plan on running an; at least; 3/16" skid plate over the tank.
So, on to the math.
To find the volume of a square, section 1, the formula is LWH. To find the gallons, you divide the volume by 231. THIS IS FOR INCHES!!!! The formula is different for feet. Therefore, we get the formula:
8"x6.5"x35.875(7/8)=1865.5" cubed. Divide that by 231 and you get 8.0757575...Gal.
To find the volume of a rectangle, section 2, the same formula is applied; LWH/231. Therefore, for section 2, we get:
7"x24"x35.875=6027" cubed, divided by 231=26.090909.....Gal
To find the volume of an extruded triangle, section 3, the formula is 1/2(LWH). Therefore, for section 3, we get:
1/2(8"x17.5"x35.875") =2511.25" cubed, divided by 231=10.871212.. Gal
Those numbers, rounded down just for the heck of it, are:
8+26+4(the only one that was above 0)=38 Gal.
Another way to do this would be to take all the volumes, in inches, add them up, and then divide them all by 231. Such as:
1865.5+6027+2511.25/231=45.03787878...
Now, for the pictures!!!!
I made this tank out of 16ga steel. I'm in the air of coating it with something, because as long as I keep gas in the tank, which I will, then there shouldn't be any rusting. I still might get some of that stuff to coat it with, the POR-15 or what ever it is....
The front, bottom, and back are all one peice, with bends in the necessary places. The sides are tac-welded for right now, as are the two baffles that are in the center. There will be one more baffle going across the width of the tank, right in the middle, to give it more stability, and then the top will be welded on once it's all cleaned up on the inside.
