Does your 4Runner lean on the Driver Side

I've met [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] and from all the mods he does his hands are the size of catchers mits. The spacer in that pic is actually four inches thick while his thumb comes in at 4.3333 inches
 
when i built the spacer lift for my 4runner, i took alot of measurements, and built the spacers from solid aluminum rod. i machined the spacers just like you see on the ebay spacer/puck lifts. i ended up fabbing them, and installing them and measuring a few times to find the sweet spot where i got the front end perfectly level. the drivers side spacer is .070 thicker than the passengers. this made the front end level out perfectly. i have 36 1/2 on both sides in the front. (stock tires) my drivers and passengers side spacers are different thickness in order to level the front end out. i dont know if the aftermarket kits are also designed the same way. i build all my own stuff so i cant say if the aftermarket springs or lifts are designed to level the front end side-side but i can tell you a spacer lift needs to be .070 thicker on the drivers side to make the drivers and pass side perfectly level.

The aftermarket kits are not designed this way because very few 4Runners lean either way. You can't tell anyone but yourself that 0.070 will level anything except your specific 4Runner because, for example both of mine are level to start with.

no, i actually meant .070. thats 70 thousandths. the front passengers side spacer is .710 thick. thats almost 3/4" thick. the front drivers side is .780 thick, which is a hair over 3/4" thick. the spacer lift i built, being about 3/4" thick lifted the front of my 4rubber 2.4" on the pass side. the drivers side being a hair over 3/4" lifted the pass side almost 2.6" this leveled out my rig. my rig was a cunt hair over 1/4" off. if i can recall.... i built the lift on a sunday and had to fill up the following tuesday, and i drive about 40 miles a day, so i will assume i had about 100 miles left in the tank when i built and measured it all. so i reckon thats about 1/3 tank?

since the spacers go on top of the shocks, they are compounding the rate in which you lift the vehicle. a half inch (.500) spacer lifts the vehicle somewhere around 2 inches so my spacers being .700-.770 lifted me right around 2.5 inches.

THIS is what I am questioning! I did a few spacer lifts back when I was just a mere lad. I usually got around 2:1. Every Toyota with IFS that I have researched gets around 2:1. The 2:1 is approximate because the suspension geometry is non-linear. Someone could use a 1.5 inch spacer and get a 3" lift. Using a 1 inch spacer could only give him a 1 3/4 inch lift instead of 2 inches. 2:1 is usually a max lift ratio. You are stating you got a 3.7:1 lift ratio. Did you measure as soon as you got it off the lift before letting it roll?

Huh? On 4Runners the spacers lift about 2:1 on the front. A one inch spacer equals 2 inches of lift. are you "assuming" its a 1" puck because they said so, or did you put a dial caliper on it? believe it or not, i actually do search the forums, and look up info rather than start a million of those newB threads asking questions about simple things.

so i will refer to antman's thread about the spacer lift install. when i read thru his install, simply to figure out how thick his spacer was and how much i needed, i looked at his pictures closely. i never actually went to toytecs lift site untill now to find out the actual dimensions. i was only going off a visual perspective. in his picture i will post below, you can see the thickness of the spacer is less than the width of the guys thumb, i measured my thumb and got a whopping .651, so i assumed by the angle of the thumb in the pic, that this spacer lift was somewhere in the neighborhood of a .550 or .600


after reviewing his before/after pix he claimed a 1.25 lift in the front respectively. i went with what was an assumption. i assumed his .550 spacer gave him about 36" solid. i wanted a taste higher so i gave it a judgemental overall thickness of .800 to start off. i installed it, backed the vehicle up, turned the wheels a few times and pulled forward and measured. it was high in the front, so i took it apart and machined it down more. i did this 2 times till i got the height about what i wanted. i have 36.5 pretty much on the nose on both sides. it took some tinkering and a little measuring and some guessing but i got it right where i wanted it. i put a .500 spacer in the rear spring assembly, and ended up with about a 1/4" rake with the rear being 1/4" higher than the front. i kinda wanted a taste higher in the rear so i plan on building another spacer for the rear and going up to somewhere around .700 in the rear. i want a taste of rake but not too much.

after reviewing and doing a little searching a few mins ago, i found that the toytec spacer he installed claims to be a half inch (.500) and equaled somewhere around 1.25" lift

the 2:1 theory is very close, not an exact science, its a close guestimate. my spacers being .210 thicker than his, gave me about .500 or a half inch more clearance. if you wanted to put a concrete number to that algorithm it would seem more like 1:2.38 which is still close to the 1:2 that is assumed.

Oh yea , I did measure it to be 1 inch with a 6 inch rule.

Your math does not add up. Let's assume a 1/2 inch spacer gives you 2 inches of lift. It does not, but anyway it's in your math. That's a 4:1 ratio. Then you say .7 inches of lift gives you a 2 1/2 inch lift. That's a 3.57:1 ratio. Everyone else is getting a maximum of 2:1 with real results being around 1.75:1.

I shouldn't even be involved here as it is your vehicle and you can do and believe what you want. The issue here is many people read these forums and the majority of information here is correct. The regular posters go to great pains to make sure the information they post is factually correct and clear. You are making claims to the contrary. You could be right. If you are, please post pictures with measurements. Thank you.
 
My '13 TE doesn't have a lean but this thread reminds me of an SR5 that I saw on the 405 in LA a few days back. It was leaning quite noticeably on the driver's side.
 
Sorry to interrupt all of the peeing :)

WRT Spring Rates and leveling the lean and handling - Are the Bilstein 5100's actually changing the Spring Rate (and possibly pre-load) when changing cogs from 0" to 0.75" to 1.5"? Would a simple spacer retain the spring rate while still leveling the truck?

Also, will having differently filled air-bags in the rear also affect overall spring rate (I assume the bags are "Additive" to the springs' rate?). Would a spacer make more sense here, too?

Where is the weight imbalance that causes the lean biased? I know the gas tank plays a role, but so does my 31M battery and my fat ass in the driver's seat :p .

Thanks guys - just trying to get my ducks in a row so I can deal with the lean PROPERLY the first time. I could see this getting labor intensive rather quick with the broad range of possibilities mentioned here. Looking to install 5100's and level the lean all together...

Does anyone make 1" rear coil spacers? It seems like that might be the best compromise in my case (where my rear is already loaded down with 250-300lbs in the cargo area - lowers the rear almost an inch, but it's still higher than the front).

My current (tentative) plan is to try and find a 1" spacer for the Driver's Rear (or have one made), and then run the 5100's up front at 0.85" (or 1.5") on both sides.

Does this seem like a sound place to start for resolving my ~3/4" lean while also leveling F/R a bit more?

Thanks for any leads on 1" spacers and any confirmations on my proposed plan of attack...

I'll be attempting to address the lean on Friday with any luck. I got the shocks and spacers I mentioned above (man ToyTec is fast!!!), and I'll probably go back to my initial plan of leaving the additional 1/4" front spacer out, and see if the single 10mm rear driver's spacer is enough to level my lean.

If not - it appears adding the front Driver's 1/4" spacer is a fairly simple add-on after the 5100's are already installed (correct?). FWIW, I'm going with the fronts at 0.85" to level the F/R rake a bit more...

Wish me luck! I'll post pics of before/after tomorrow :cool:
 
Updates. Got everything installed. Took a little longer than I thought, and I missed my 2PM Alignment appointment by 20 minutes :( . I'll have to go back on Monday @ 11AM on my way to work. I'm sure the alignment isn't too far out (raised less than 1"), and I won't be driving more than 100 miles until then...

I installed the front 5100's @ the second snap-ring for the 0.85" lift with the stock springs. I had an awesome tech @ Midas compress and swap the springs for me. Best $40 I've spent in a while IMO (he actually only charged $20, but tipped $20 for his speed and expertise :thumb: )...

In addition, the 10mm Driver's Side Rear Spring Spacer got me within 1/16" of lean on front and rear! I had to disconnect the rear-sway-bar to get the rear spring out (dropped the rear axle while the shocks were out) so I could add the spacer - so it was basically like I was replacing springs and shocks just to add the spacer! Well worth the effort IMNSHO. It helped the lean and raised the rear a smidgen.

I decided not to install the 1/4" Driver's Side Front Spacer, and I'm glad I didn't. It would have been overkill IMO. Hanging on to it for now...

After a few miles of driving, I just measured:

Driver's Front: 35 1/2"
Passenger Front: 35 9/16"

Driver's Rear: 36 5/8"
Passenger Rear: 36 11/16"

Pretty close - And close enough for me! Rides very well - pretty much what I was expecting. I even got the headlights re-aimed a few minutes ago - all done!

I'll snap some pics and before/after comparisons over the weekend (like there's not already enough of those :blah: )

Reviving this thread because I have a major lean problem and I want to see if anyone else with a more recent model has experienced anything similar. I have a 19 TRD ORP non-kdss, and I have over 1/2" lean in the front and around 1" in the rear. I've been to the dealer five times, and they tried swapping the rear springs and replaced the front drivers-side coilover, with no effect. They are now saying it's "close enough" and "within spec", and directing me to contact Toyota directly. The last tech's notes say the sides are within 12-15mm which is clearly false, at least in the rear. I *may do a mild lift in the future and I could deal with this then, but I just want it to sit and ride right out of the box. I've examined a dozen other recent stock T4Rs and none have the kind of lean mine has; most are within 1/4" side to side.

Any others with similar stories, or is mine just that off?

I have tiny bit of driver side lean on my 19 OR. It doesn't bother me.

center of hub to top of fender measurements

I measured my 2019 Off Road (No KDSS) w/ an estimated 200lbs hanging off the front and Eibach Pro Lift, stock size 265/70R17 Falken Wildpeaks, and a full tank of gas. I get the following measurements measuring center of the wheel to the edge of the fender.

Driver side front = 21.75 inches
Passenger side front = 22 inches

Driver side rear = 23 in
Passenger side rear = 23.5 in

Stock Height is mentioned in one of the previous threads as being:
Front = 19.125
Rear = 22

Ride comfort is subjective to the driver. I find the Eibach lift makes the truck feel more taught over stock. Where before the body roll through the curves and nosedive on braking was horrible.

Now it's tight in the curves and nosedive is gone. I find it is still comfortable to drive on bumpy washboard unpaved roads and still is comfortable for paved road trips. I don't find the ride jarring at all. YMMV"
 
I had an inch in the rear and .5in in the front after my lift. I had spacers installed on the drivers side front and rear to help but it still has some. Its really annoying and bugs the hell out of me every time I notice it. I do not have KDSS.
