Double DIN Input Sought

Seeing some deals, yet I feel ignorant as heck on today's automotive "stereo" options...

Want, in addition to the obvious AM & FM reception:

- Navigation / GPS
- Backup camera input/s
- Connectivity, BT and USB
- Hands free calling would be nice

We are an Apple and IOS family, so is CarPlay the way to go? Was hoping for less than 500 bucks. Something like this, maybe?

Go with the Pioneer. The Apple car play/ android auto is money. I was looking at the Pioneer avh2300nex because it was the entry level to what I wanted. I ended up with the avh4100nex and couldn't be happier. I am an android user but Google maps, bt, rearview camera, and DVD player all work flawlessly. Hands free calling is legit. I went with those models because they are a 7inch screen with the buttons at the bottom. It also has a tilt option for convenience

What you end up going with should be based on intended use. Do you plan on adding new speakers and going for a better sound stage or do you plan on keeping the stockers and just want the better interface for modern life? How much will you use USB sticks for music compared to your phone?

You've already got some pretty good criteria to help you decide but those two questions above should be given some thought before you purchase anything.

I do with see where the Pioneer does both IOS and Android. I like that option.

Looks like no HDMI for mirroring. Not something I had thought about, but noticed while reading reviews. Looks like one can still mirror via other means though. Not sure how desireable that would be though.

Also, the Pioneer allows for two cameras. I like that.

You got me looking at the avh4100nex now. A bit larger screen, detachable face. What else is different? Wow, just found it for a few bucks more...

Good question. New speakers will happen. No addtional amps, no sub/s. I don't see us using USB sticks for tunes. Thanks much. Have shopping carts filling-up...

If your upgrading speakers and not amping them your going to want to get a deck that has the highest RMS per channel you can find. Getting a deck is like any other purchase. It's all about trade-offs. I'm a pretty big audiophile and for me soundstage trumps everything. I've got way more money in speakers and amps then I do in my head units. But I play almost everything in FLAC from either my MP3 player or memory sticks.
 
Ok, I bought the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. There was only one left at what looks to be a pretty good price - $415 delivered. Like 80 bucks more than the
Pioneer AVH-1330NEX, so seems worth it, to me at least...

In addition to the removeable faceplate, it seems that the angle can be adjusted too? There are preamp outputs, should I want to venture down that path later...

I realize speakers might be on sale today too. Any recommendations? Might 6.5s work all the way around? I thought I read there are 4's in the rear...

Glad I could help you change your mind! You will not be disappointed with that purchase. I bought a plug off amazon that is HDMI/USB for like 12 bucks or something. I plugged it into the back of the deck and flush mounted (with little sanding) in one of the 12v sockets in the center console. You could also run it to the armrest compartment if you really want to get custom with it. I have an android so I have USB 2 for my phone and USB 1 for my ipod touch. Ipod is ran into my glove box. I have the HDMI hooked up so my girlfriend can watch movies from the passenger side. The tilt option is awesome and the removable face is great for security. You will not be disappointed. Side note, don't have vehicle in park while ejecting DVD/CD, the face touches the shifter a little bit

infantry503, really helpful information. Thanks for sharing the photos too, and the caveat when in Park (disc eject). Will likely only use that for DVDs, for the kids in the back seat.

Do you use it for navigation, turn-by-turn? Seems that it doesn't have a built-in GPS, so I imagine Apple and Google Maps works quite well...

Yeah the google maps works really well. Turn by turn is accurate. You can also use waze if you have it. I haven't messed around with that app yet. BT audio works well but I just use android auto for that. I mounted my mic for the hands free in the headliner behind the rear view mirror. Farther away from wind = better for people to hear you talking. My 1st gen I had it flush mounted in the dash and no one could hear anything I was saying..... ever. Didn't help that I had over sized tires and removable top. haha

Since it only puts out 14 RMS, you won't see a huge difference in changing out the speakers. If you do get speakers, definitely get component speakers for the front (the woofer cones and tweeters are separated with a crossover in between), 6 1/2". The rears are 5 1/4" I think or maybe 5 1/2", they are smaller than the fronts is the point.

A small amp that puts out 30+ RMS per channel will make a big difference. Something like these are great, small and easy to wire and really boost those new speakers:

Well that was the fastest decision I've ever given guidance on. lol

Congrats on the new deck. Where did you order from? If you got it from Crutchfield your all set as the include the needed Metra adapter. If not you'll want to get one. I'll dig up the links if you need them.
 
I already did the work making the T1819 Scion radio fit my 97. I'm in the process of getting the T100071 Scion NAV equipped radio for 135 used and buy the back up camera equipement to complete the radio. It should be plug and play since I already did the work to make the T1819 fit.

I realize there is a lot of extra work involved in going my route but I'm 99% certain my setup is not on the list of getting stolen out of my rig. I like the button layout of the factory stereos. The sound quality is far superior to the radio that came stock in the 97.

A pretty big price delta compared to Crutchfield. I ordered from Walmart ($414.80, free shipping).

I'm building my stereo system piece by piece as well. My sub amp is arriving tomorrow. My next audio upgrade is sub, component speakers, 4 channel amp, and then remove all the carpet and door skins so I can do a full dynamat setup to reduce rattling/ road noise. My 1st gen had a really good set up so I am going to have to out do it in my 3rd gen

gamefreakgc, not ignoring you. Have been busy...

What is the RMS of the stock unit? I'm not adverse to getting an amp, even one of the one's you referenced. I'm not up on the wiring involved, but I'm sure it will include a wiring diagram...

So, if I go with such an amp, any recommendation on speakers?

Our first family trip in the Runner will be during my children's Winter Break (3rd week of Feb). Getting the tunes sorted-out would be a good thing for sure.

I'd like to get speakers next. Might you know the sizes needed?

The speakers are 5.25 but with very little modification you can use 6.5's. 5.25 speakers are a weird size so you typically pay a little more for them.
