DRLs in '22 Limited (and probably others with factory LED headlights)

I was a little vague on how to pick up the wiring, because Toyota seems to customize things between trim levels, and I would hate to be responsible for toasting someone's lighting system. But with the disclaimer that you should confirm everything with a multi-meter, and don't hunt me down if you fry something - here's what I did.

I bought an extension harness like this. Amazon.com: iJDMTOY (2) H11 H8 H9 Extension Wiring Harness Sockets Wires Compatible With Headlights or Fog Lights Use : Automotive

and modified them like this:

So the only wire I added is the black wire that takes ground back from the left side to the right side. I'll try to take some pictures of the harness at some point, but it may not look like much since the connections are covered in heat shrink and flexible tubing.

I will also mention that the aftermarket harness that I bought had the red and black wires reversed from the way Toyota does things, so I had to de-pin them and swap them. You could just use red for ground and black for hot if you didn't want to take the time to do that - or the one you buy may be set up correctly.

You added in the black wire from one side to the other and looped back the red wire to the other port and that is all. Right?
I’m not good at this stuff so please tell me if I’m missing anything.

The problem is how Toyota has these wired. They ran two regular light bulbs in series to make them dimmer. As far as I know, there aren't any plug and play LEDs that work well in this environment.

How about an ELI5 (Explain me Like I’m 5) step by step breakdown? I’ve ordered the harness you linked in but I’m afraid I’m missing something. I’d even pay for step by step instructions if you willing. Please brother.

Once you understand what the desired connections are you need to make sure your modified connections are solid. Soldering and insulating with heat shrink tubing is the best. Crimping or butt splicing is ok if you do it properly. A lot of cheap foreign wire harnesses are hastily made with no quality control so you can sometimes get bad crimps to the terminals. You have to examine everything carefully.

I'd be willing to risk it and test them. Worst case, it doesn't work and I toss them in a storage bin or donate them to a 22 Limited owner. I'm no stranger to buying parts that don't work and sit around afterwards. You should see my guns and gear hobby

You say you only added the black wire, but in your diagram you drew a red loop on the right plug that plugs into the existing harness. It looks like you added a red wire there that loops from black to red on the plug, or am I mis-interpreting things?

He literally *added* that one black wire. He repurposed the other wire to jumper it as shown in the diagram.

Must only apply to the US. I'm up in Canada and have a '22 TRD ORP and I used my high beams for the first time today and was surprised that they came out of the halogen housing.

The Canadian government introduced new lighting laws to curb people who drive "phantom" at night, so maybe this has something to do with it (but I don't really see why it would because don't US limiteds have auto Bi-LEDs?).

The law is that vehicles (as of Sept 2021) must have at least one of the following: automatic headlights; or daylight running taillights; or a dash that isn't illuminated during the day. Toyota elected to put auto headlights in all Canadian 4Runner trims. Not sure if this is the same in the USA.
