DRLs in '22 Limited (and probably others with factory LED headlights)

Idk why Toyota didn’t just use LED DRL for all the new 4 runner headlights. It would made our lives alot easier. Lol

Follow-up

Just installed these this afternoon on my wife’s 22 trd sport. They look factory.

for '21 pro/limited or '22+ models with bi-led projectors, i found this to be a cheap and effective pnp option. have been using it for about two weeks. no flickering, not piercing bright to annoy other drivers.

Amazon.com: Auxbeam 9005 9006 LED Fog Light Bulbs White, Plug and Play Design 4000 Lumens HB3 HB4 LED Fog Light Bulbs, H10 9145 LED Replacement Bulbs for Fog Light, Turn Signal Lights, 2 Pcs : Automotive

Follow-up question: how are y'all finding these after a couple of mos? I'm taking delivery of a 2022 in the next couple of weeks (couldn't stay away from 4Rs) and am interested in the plug-n-play option in particular. If these LEDs can handle being wired in series long-term with no flickering or adverse effects, I'm down. TIA.

2022 trd pro here, ive been using the auxbeams they work fine although they are pretty dim, i would say even dimmer than stock halogens, tried to get the diode dynamics hp48 but they wouldn't even light up

He literally *added* that one black wire. He repurposed the other wire to jumper it as shown in the diagram.
It shows a red loop wire yet the existing red wire from the harness is still there or is the red wire from the amazon harness actually pulled and used as the red loop wire and just not removed from the diagram?

Sorry if I'm making it more confusing. I would love to get this working.

I have a 22 and i am currently using them (Amazon cheap ones) as DRL's. They do work and look fine however i have noticed they do flicker very slightly if you are close and looking for it. This is a non issue when you step back a few feet. The other weird thing is they occasionally get much brighter for a split second randomly. You won't see it happen if your just watching for a few seconds but leave the truck running for a few minutes while watching and it will happen. At least it does on my 22 limited.

Update: I am now able to produce the pulse in brightness by parking a few feet from the garage wall and turning the light switch to the manual DRL position. Watch the reflection and press the brake pedal. You will see a very quick change in brightness.

I am very interested in the modded harness to allow full 12v but I am still confused looking at the diagram provided in this thread.

That diagram is the finished harness.
That little red oval loop might make more sense if it was colored black to match the color coming out of the Right plug. The idea would be to cut it about 4 inches from the plug, loop it back and solder it to the red wire in that same plug.

The “added” black wire is long and used to extend a ground from the left harness plug to the right harness plug.

The diagram colors may not match what you get from the harness vendor. Refer to the headlight wiring diagram PDF and the q451990 harness diagram and use your voltmeter to make sure of the plug polarities and that the voltages are on the correct pins. Be sure of your work.

Now I get it!

sorry, not too active on this forum.

no issues so far. against my garage wall i can see flickering every now and then but it's virtually undetectable when you're looking at it. looks factory like others have stated.

Did mod - pics

Completed this with dynamic LEDS ( 9005 HP48 LED Bulbs ) and harness with slight change to harness. First - verify your wiring. Measure dc volts from passenger side green wire to drivers side white w/ black wire. Engine will be running, I measured 13.9 volts.

Next , verify the pink wire does indeed run from the passenger side to drivers side. 2 ohms

Get a set of harness extenders. I used the same as mentioned above… the red and black were reversed on mine and my OCD made me fix it, red = +dc.

Here is the harness disassemble and jumped over to the drivers side.

Then reassembled for install.

The only change I made is instead of running a black common wire back to the drivers side light, I just caught chassis ground on the fender. This means you only modify the extension on the passenger side. You actually don’t need an extender on the drivers side if you use this method.

Thank you for the photo's and taking the time to document this! I like the cleaner ground and not having to mess with the driver side. This mod makes the truck look the way it should have from the factory. I assume your setup is now flicker free?

No flicker at all as I think they went away with Pulse width modulation for DRL when they changed to the LED setup. This mod gives you full 12.8VDC (est) at the fixtures so you get full spec voltage for the LED bulb. Also just as important, you don't want to blind people with your DRL so you need to respect the lumen outputs as well. The LEDs from Dynamic are really great for this application.

I talked to Diode Dynamics today, and it sounds like the HP48 may fit the bill. He seems to think that at full power, it might be about equivalent to the 9005s running at half power. This sounds like the half a$$ performance I'm looking for for this application. :D

I'll post more when I get them installed. Knowing my track record, that will either be next week or sometime in 2025.

Any updates?

I noticed that the Diode Dynamics bulbs are failing now. Of course about 6 months out of warranty. I may buy more though. 3.5 years and almost 50K miles isn't terrible.
