Door seals, grommets, etc are not usually airtight.
I find this statement hard to swallow.
Through out my years of being an Aerospace Engineer, I have learned that seals and grommets, main proposes in there design "IS" to be air & water tight.
That doesn't mean there isn't a design flaws or issues that is keeping them from doing there job. Most of the time its due to not meeting the design spec's or tolerances. But they could not be installed correctly, or the Body panels may not meet spec or tolerance themselves.
Some could argue that during a water crossing the seals are proven not to be water tight. But again it's all about the design of the seal or grommet. When the outside forces of the water apply pressure to the seal, it's more pressure per square inch on the seal then its designed for.
On a side note: When I picked up my 4Runner the first thing I noticed was how airtight the seals are. Sometimes I will have two doors closing at the same time, one of the doors will not close all the way, due to air pressure. Another problem I tend to have is when closing the hatch. If there's passengers in the cab and the hatch is closed, some times the passengers will complain it makes they're ears hurt, due to air pressure.
I recommend using tape over the gaps in the hatch to see if that’s where the dust is coming in at.
