Early 5th gen trails vs new 14-15 trails?

Great question....hopefully someone has an equally good answer.
I just checked price of under hood insulation from Toyota for 2012 Limited to go on my 2012 TE. Price $180.00 I did not check on '15 TE insulation but I have not seen insulation installed so don't know for sure they are the same.
I think I'll look for alternatives-- Anyone find one?

When I pulled my '12 TE into the dealer I immediately got into the seat of a '15 TE premium for a test drive. I can't remember the order but I drove all three that day and then my wife and I went to dinner before heading back to the dealer. I don't remember if I noticed the noise difference when getting into a '15 for the initial drive but I definitely remember the difference when getting back into my '12 TE to go to dinner. So much so that when I got back on the lot I opened the hood on the '15 to see if there were any differences. I then noticed the hood insulation.
I usually don't post how I "feel" about something because that is the most subjective answer you can ever have. The '15 felt tighter and quieter though. Sure, I had almost 70K on my '12 TE so some of that was just a bit of age and wear of bushings and seat material for example. There was a definite difference in the noise though. When I first saw the the blue gauges of the '14 I liked them better but I've since grown to appreciate the red. It's subjective, but there is something industrial about the red. They are great at night as well.

As far as 30+ k for an early 5th gen trail goes, people are dumb and will pay it... logic does not have to apply. It's just supply and demand. I think some of it is fueled by the look of the 14+. Some people love it, some people hate it... This gives the 10-13 market a boost.
Dealers love 4 runners. They hardly ever go to auction, so they consider used ones to be a huge money maker for them.
The best deal on a used one is almost always a for sale by owner. If you look long enough, you can find a deal.

I think Toyota blurred the lines between the '14-'15 SR5 and TE. It's really just opinion if that is good or not. I do like how the TE really distinguished itself from the others within the '10-'13 model years.

Actually, they were trying to blur the lines between the limited and sr5 trim in the US market in 10-13. In 14,15 they went back to keeping the limited different.

I would say that they did what the Canadian models already were.....the Canadian SR5s had the TE exterior package (at least mostly) and then Toyota must have decided to reduce the "#of models" headed over to North America.

and I like the red gauges mixed with the white numbers on the speedo, tach, ect. Much better looking than the 4th Gens all red/orange color scheme.

While I was there a guy suggested that instead of a liner, I might spray several coats of rubber undercoater on the same area covered by the liner. He said that he had done it and with a good build-up of undercoating result was lower noise level and no hood flutter. He did say it is necessary to mask off areas for overspray.
Anyone do this or have opinion whether or not it is a good alternative to hood liner?

i bought my 2010 TE Premium 47k miles for 27k. search in a bigger radius. The price of a used and a new is NOT the same or even close. A new can cost you close to 40k if not more. look at these links below. The prices shown are not close to new ones. Also, you just have to look at right place. I flew from Denever to Omaha to get mine and drove it back. I saved 4k compared to Denver market, only paid $300 in ticket and Gas.

I personally have a rule that I NEVER buy a first year vehicle. Ever.
While Toyota does a good job with working the bugs out on new models, I let others be the guinea pigs.
There is a theory I have that the last year of any given generation is the best because that far into a production run all the loose screws and faults have been discovered and fixed.
