EatonKyleH's Build Thread

Should have this done by the end of the week. Still working on installing the FROR crossmember and getting all the shifters in the final places so I can have the upholstery shop make a stock looking leather boot for it all.

here is a teaser in the meantime... It was dark but I finally drove her home today and its shifting great!!!

Center console is back together! I just punched holes in the stock shift boot for now and it works/looks ok. I'll be sprucing it up soon but just wanted to get everything run through the paces before I focus on it.

It was a painus in the anus to get all the shifters to fit and look how I wanted but in the end I'm super stoked on it. I cut and welded every shifter including the transmission shifter several times to get the fitment just right and so that all transmission and transfer case positions can be used without any shifter interference.

The left shifter is rear case H-N-L
The middle is front case H-N-L
The right is 4WD-2WD

the picture shows all the shifters in their rearmost positions and the trans shifter in 4th.

The shift feel is great and smooth. I'm very impressed with how quiet the gear drive case is and it ghost rides real nice and slow now.

On the highway I can't notice a difference whatsoever which is great.

I'll be installing the new crossmember this weekend and share a few pics of underneath then.

How do you like your 861's in the rear? I am going to go to those I think cause the 891's are just not cutting it any more...

I really like them. They sat extremely high at first and I'd probably have a hard time recommending them without an absurd amount of weight in the back. For me they sit where I want loaded but still higher than I'd care for without my gear in the back...

I came from 890s to these and it was a huge jump in height in the rear but I'm also only running less lift in the front than most and wanted to keep it fairly low still. I do have more weight in the back already than most though with the plate bumper, spare, drawers, fridge, etc. and it still sits high until I load water and gear to head out....

Basically if you are considering adding more weight to the back and towing the trailer a lot I'd say go for them. There just aren't very many good options for a mild load carrying increase over 891s and will probably lead to more changes in front lift or added weight in the rear to balance it out.

They ride and flex great. I haven't had any complaints there.

Guess you haven't seen my build lol. I definitely don't pack light. I don't think that weight in the rear will be an issue since I have the tool box, aux batt, tire carrier rear, all the other crap, and then I pull my expo trailer on top of that.

I figured they would be pretty extreme as far as lift goes, but with my 891's my rear is lower than my front... and the coil overs a not adjusted that high.

I have and I think they would be your best bet.

I just am really trying to ready you for a big change in lift height in the rear. I thought my fat old rig was going to tame them without issue but was kind of shocked when I installed them for awhile. Now I admittedly add gear or drive around more loaded than I need to so it sits low enough.
Other guys I know with them have been loading sand bags and other junk in the back in an attempt to sag theirs and they weren't light either.

If she's keeping the fat and proud of it thing going than it will work out great.

Gotcha, yeah I have plans to add a bit more weight in the coming weeks. I prefer more height in the rear anyway. It will be nice to not have to adjust the headlights every time I hook up to the trailer too.

How are you liking that crawl box? On your triple stick setup....how is the linkage run? Under the floor? I want to do the 99 console conversion but I think it will work best with the triple setup.

It's been great for the parking lot crawling I've done with it so far lol. I'll have more to say about it in a couple weeks when I really use it. I can tell its definitely going to be game changing for this rig though.

The linkages will not clear the floor... not even close really... I tried beating the floor back first... not enough.

To run the linkages for the triple sticks I had to cut out a large portion of the tunnel under the center console and reshape the sheet metal under the console. If you took the console off now though you can get to all the linkages and even remove the shifter base off both cases still in the truck which I like. They are just barely beneath the cup holders now but no other cutting had to be done to the cup holder itself or console and you could never tell anything has changed in the interior other than the new sticks popping out up front.

Ok. I have a 1/2 body lift which should help a little. Were you able to seal it back up? If you open it up any time soon please take some pics. I get to test my duals this weekend. I managed to rip off my winch and destroy it last night trying to recover a Jeep :pout:

Cross member is in! It came out great. A little more work than anticipated.... but ain't it always.

I used a Front Range Off-Road Tacoma t-case cross member.

Mounting to every bolt along the case. this leaves a big advantage for how high you can tuck everything up in there and cover it with the skid plates because the cross member does not go below the t-case.

If you haven't seen one they are pretty unique and look like this.

Well the taco and the 4runner share the t-case and this bolted right on but the body of the 4runner comes down really low on the right side so I had to cut the cross member up a bit to contour to the body better.

Other than that the width was perfect. Everything is just fitted much tighter under the 4runner.

Now just gotta clean up and paint.

And a random photo of things to come.
I started tubing the firewall back to the body mount and covered the new metal/welds in seam sealer. Once I finish the fender wells in bed liner it will look like nothing happened.

Funny I used to think my rock sliders were a little short.... now they seem just right.

One thing I've learned is that a body lift (larger the easier) would have made this whole process way wayyyy easier... I've really wanted to refrain from using one since I started this build and that stubbornness resulted in a lot of extra work... but in the end I'm happy as can be. If you are considering triple sticks or using this cross member a body lift of an inch or more would save you a lot of work.

Can't believe no one has commented on this yet! Triple sticks and the crossmember look great. If I ever decide to go duals, I'll be referencing this thread for sure.

lol, thanks! I'll try to get more info and pictures up when I'm done with some of the finishing touches and do more explaining. I've definitely been vague so far.

If you ever do go down that route and have any questions I'd be glad to help out.

Kyle! Very very cool build. The triple sticks are insane. Love your truck. (because it's almost like mine, so I may be biased) Very inspirational and you are now responsible for me needing to go spend money!

Thanks Robert! haha this forum is a bank account killer that's for sure. I thought I'd just do tires and mayybee a small lift before I found this place. I see you've also wound up with a no sunroof, cloth interior, with matching limited flares and no cladding on the doors that's rad I haven't seen many others... Is yours a manual trans by chance?

**** yeah dude, your clutch is going to thank you many times over.

Haha I'm surprised it's held up this long. Still have some finishing to do and get the skids back on... then it's wheelin time. Kinda sick of working on it now honestly lol.

.

No, It's auto. Very rare it seems. I assume someone ordered it that way. My mechanic calls it "The OddRunner" Just starting out and going to turn it into more of an overlander...you know, "tires and maybe a small lift..."
