Yup.
I find it typically does it over 1800 rpm... sometimes it doesn't, but most of the time it does. My L/100km goes to zero (no fuel being used)...
My 6 liter diesel turns off the injectors. It's most noticeable when slowing down and letting off the throttle, no more "ga-ga-ga-ga-ga" from the oil burner. I thought it was just a diesel thing, guess not.
Anyhow back on topic, down shift away bro, keep up on maintenance and you'll be fine. I was stoked when I drove my 2012 TE the first time and saw I could manual shift the auto tranny.

there are cars out there that shutdown half the4 cylinders during light use or no pedal pressure..
and.. like my other toyota's none will go into 1st gear until the computer allows it at a certain speed.
no, it will not hurt your trans to downshift when going down hill.. i DON'T do it extremely either (going down 3 gears to a real high rpm) but i'm sure you can.. my 98 gs400 was proof of that when i sold it at 170k running smooooth despite the abuse that trans saw

When I came down from Pikes peak, I didn't use engine brake. At half way down, a ranger stopped us and tested temperature of all 4 brakes, then we were invited to drink tea inside... I can't forget that smell~

That was a good deed on his part to possibly save your lives.. downshift next time!

It is not a good deed, it is mandatory stop going down Pikes Peak. Everyone gets stopped and if you have been riding your brakes all the way down you are required to pull over till they are cooled off. He checks all cars with a heat gun.
This being the 5th gen forum, this thread is about automatic transmissions.

I once rented a chevy trail blazer on a business trip that required some work off road - no engine braking on downshift... Scared the heck out of me for a second. Sold me on keeping my 4runner forever.
So, we're really lucky we have a real truck.

In the mountains, I take it out of overdrive with the cruise on coming down the instant I see the beginnings of a speed increase. Unless the hill is really steep, this works really well at keeping a constant speed. You automagically get engine braking when you need it and throttle when you need it to maintain speed. Unfortunately, the moment you need to use 3rd, the cruise shuts off...
Also, I don't downshift before starting the descent. I downshift the moment I notice insufficient engine braking to preclude a speed increase without using the brakes. There is no big jerk and it doesn't sound or feel like the truck is stressed by this.

Yep, he stands there with an IR thermometer and checks everyone's brakes. You remember all those signs about using low gears?
Brakes convert kinetic energy into heat. Once they reach a certain temperature, if they are unable to be cooled fast enough, they can no longer provide braking. If you had kept going down Pike's Peak another mile or two, your brakes would no longer be functioning and you would end up driving off a cliff.

yea i know all about that, i've got a cabin in the smokies.. i didnt know that they mandatory stop you and check your brakes
