F**ing rock "chip" !

I'm casually strolling down the freeway when BAM a sound not unlike a gunshot scares the $#!t out of me. I thought my tire blew but was horrified to see my windshield. Here are some pics...the projectile had to be ping pong sized; no ordinary rock can do something like that right ?

Holy s**t!! That is huge! Sorry to see that. I thought I had some bad windshield chips.

- How fast were you going and was traffic light or heavy?
- Is your hood alright?

I always try at all costs to avoid following those damn gravel trucks or semi's in general. Sometimes their open wheels can kick up some nasty stuff (my 4runner's front end has some highway scars as testament). Hopefully you can get it fixed soon and it won't start creeping.

Probably about 85 mph in the carpool lane on the 60 freeway. No body damage, which was weird. At first I thought it was a semi full of gravel/rocks, but they're off to the right a lot of times. I did drive under a overpass and thought some punk might have done it, but I'm not sure. I'm getting quotes on windshields, so if anyone in SoCal can recommend a great place that would be real helpful.

Darkside, I've heard good things about Safelite Glass. My wife's Nissan got her windshield replaced and the seal was pretty good. They come out to your location.

www.safelite.com

I'm looking at the impact pattern, I'm no ballistics expert but it looks like a "from above" hit. Something pretty significant in size too. I doubt it would be from some big rock bouncing on the freeway high enough to miss your front end (or hood completely for that matter). Then again I could be wrong. Even at 85 mph you would have seen something significant come at you if it were road debris.

Is there any residual debris? Usually if a rock did indeed hit it would leave some powdered debris or residue around the area. I notice this with all my windshield chips. It's looking more like some punk with a box of golfballs.

I know it's no consolation but it could have been worst and be in your line of sight, that would be a bigger pisser. Anyway, good luck on the repairs. Let us know how it goes.

Common bro, that will buff right out.

Seriously, that really sucks. Are you sure someone didn't shoot at you?

last time something that happened to me was when I was test driving a Mini Cooper S. pop can hit the window that flew out of a truck in front of me...... haven't been back to that dealership since.

I got mine 2 weeks ago on the 71. I never saw what hit me and there were no other cars or trucks around???? Mine was nowhere near as bad as yours, so I had it filled the following day, which I hated so my deductable on my insurance is $100 for a new windshield and I am also looking for a good replacement shop as well, so I guess we're in the same boat.

I figured out that some idiot golfer sliced his shot and hit my car. There are two golf courses on either side of the 60 freeway in Riverside, so I'm thinking with the impact left an errand golf ball is the culprit.

So now I'm $200 poorer because some shmuck can't hit a damn golf ball.

Hey I'm new to this. Like this site and all the info.

2 weeks after I got my 04 I cracked my windshield. I used Safelite, they had to replace the glass 5 times. Glass was warped in both top corners. Finally asked for factory glass which was perfect. Just keep an eye out for it.

YIKES.

I've had a few "chips" and the sound and everything is as per description, but man that's a nasty scrape.

On the Runner I have a chip (tiny) right in my line of sight that, given the correct sunlight, is really blinding.

I think this is a great time to bring up this topic: When you replace your Runners glass do you want just any replacement that fits or the original Toyota windshield?

I ask because toyota has treated the glass with some sort of rain-away (as listed in the instruction book). This rain-beading actually appears to work, so if I get a new windscreen, I want the same glass! In manitoba, our public insurance will be default try to put in the cheapest replacement part possible, so I may have to "battle" with them a little to get what I want.

Thoughts?

I have never seen anything special about the water shedding glass that Toyota put on my 03 4runner.

Any name brand window glass should be fine. I actually am always more concerned about the quality of the installation.

Depending on your insuarance, they may replace your windshield with zero cost to you. Also since your vehicle is very new, they may allow you to replace it with OEM glass.

Statefarm paid to have my 4Runner's windshield replaced by Toyota glass with zero out of pocket. The new glass says Lamipane instead of Temperlite underneath the Toyota glass. Call your INS and see what they can do for you. Could save you some money and this is the type of reason you have insuarance. Also it should not increase your premiums.

I saw that too, but have not noticed the windshield sheds water any differently than on other, older cars.

Claiming on insurance is the thing to do (if you have glass coverage). Any damage that is not your fault, whether caused by a golfball or vandal, will not impact your premium (unless you claim for every minor dent and chip).

Sorry to see that. That crack does look like it is the size of a golfball. I didn't think a rock would make such a huge mark like that. I got my frist chip early last week from a rock. Have you looked into replacing the windshield with the thicker 2006 glass? The only thing is I am not sure if it would fit.

Damn, sorry to see that happen to your truck.

I don't know what kind of golf course that is, but my dad's coworker had his windshield hit by a golf ball and he took the ball and car over to the golf course they assumed liability. Hopefully, you'll get everything situated without too much hassles.

i can see the scene now...
so some guy having too many beers at a cinco de mayo party decides that he wants to celebrate mexican independance by firing off his gun, does so by shooting off a couple rounds into the sky.
a few miles away, you're cruising down the street, minding your own business when BAM! the bullet bounces off your windshield into the near by bushes, leaving the worst damn "f**ing rock "chip" i've ever seen, on your windshield.

do you have a 4th gen? i hear that the windshields on the '06 are a little thicker than before. maybe you can get the thicker windshield when you get it replaced. it'll help reduce the wind noise, although nothing was going to save you from that f**ing rock.

This shows your complete ignorance. Cinco de Mayo isn't for Mexican Independence, it is to celebrate a victory over the French. This was the backbreaking event for the French and they've been surrendering ever since... :bash:

ok ok...mexican independance day is on sept 16, and "cinco de mayo" is celebrated to remember the victory against the french in the battle of puebla on may 5, 1862.

so let me try this again...
