Fact or Fiction?

Thanks, that's very helpful in finding the one article you appear to be referring to when stating we're all racists. I Googled "we're all racists" as you suggested and found "About 90,800,000 results (0.46 seconds)"

I'm faced with either a lot of reading or concluding you're citing some obscure bit written by someone voicing an opinion based on questionable data.

I'll pass.

Sorry you would have to work so hard to find a link.
ThorInc made a statement in another thread about poor people never getting any better under any president. I spent a lot of time researching that and posted a complete rebuttal throughly disproving his claim, along with several citations and links. There was no response, no like, no nothing. It seems many of you guys like to spew rhetoric and half truths yet when confronted with facts you become silent. I'm not saying you are like that but commenting is easy, as proven by the hundreds of talking heads on all the 24 hour news channels. Reading, researching and figuring out what really is the truth actually takes work.

Thanks for the link! Google search is pretty vast.

Look, I know I think about things differently than anyone else on many many topics. I also don't pretend to be right on everything or agree with most. I get what you all are saying, that there are degrees of racism. I contend that what racism does to someone as far as how they respond to those thoughts is what has levels.

But you still haven't responded to my critique of that statement within the other thread. In which your response to where you explain how we are all racist but the acceptance is where the levels are. Again, that goes completely against your speeding individual analogy.

Name me two administrations or arms of the US legislature that has reduced poverty in the last 25years?

I tend to agree with you about racism but I think to explore the different levels you have to tag "discrimination" & discriminatory acts into the mix to research it fully, i.e. where it may affect the rights of another individual.

As I mentioned I found plenty of links but you were citing a specific one which was pretty hard to determine.

Now that I've read it I have to wonder about your determination of what constitutes fact when your cited article states: "The implication is clear. We may all be racist and sexist and ageist at heart..."

That simple "may" carries great significance to many who prefer to determine the validity of any fact.

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-topic/220188-if-you-had-vote-one-10.html#post2382187 here is my response from the other thread. It has lost something as it has been several days since I posted.

If there are no absolutes in your field the word "may" and such are normal. They didn't test the whole world so the word "may" or "probably" is accurate. As far as I can determine everyone who has ever been tested shows racism. Hey... I posted the link from a source beyond reproach to a neophyte like me. It's not Fox News or MSNBC. Be skeptical if you want.

I feel like a dead horse is being beaten here.
Yes, yes it is. If someone thinks they are not racist then they are wrong. Or sexist. Or ageist. Or many others. Human nature.

Thanks, I'll choose being a skeptic over believing everything I read. This is particularly true of the web. I used to teach website validity back when people cared about such foolish things.

Yeah, that is useless today. Now all that is required is a picture to go along with a piece of text. Then it's fact.

Are you racist? Do you know any adults that are not racist? That ought to be your first metric.

Why are you being antagonistic?

After giving your question some thought I have come to the conclusion that while I'm not racist I am now apparently prejudiced against people who identify themselves as engineers.

Didn't mean to be. Just an honest question. Also all this is very far from my wheelhouse and I don't do a very good job explaining myself when it comes to social issues. As near as I can tell I am utterly unremarkable in most areas such as political and social conventions.
Many of these subjects are uncomfortable and some hit close to home. It's hard to be dispassionate when talking about them. Good luck.

I've still got to disagree with this. I don't believe that all people are racist to the same degree and the only difference is how they respond. I truly dont believe that someone who has a slightly racist thought is anywhere near as racist, even just in their own head, as someone who commits violent racist acts.

I do not have thoughts of exterminating all the jews that I have just chosen not to act on. It's just not the same. No one can claim to know what goes on in another persons head, but I"m most certain that my thoughts are no where near as racist, bigoted, discriminatory, or violent as what has been demonstrated by racists throughout history.

This isn't the first time you've made this very broad statement which I understand you believe of yourself. You are free to state that Trump is a racist but tossing in everyone else is not a fact thus you should be disqualified from participating based on your statement.

Do you honestly believe everyone is a racist? Please enlighten me!

Definition: a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

using that definition, how is what trump said racist?

Name me two administrations or arms of the US legislature that has reduced poverty in the last 25years?
it is not within the governments responsibilities, nor power to do such a thing.

One problem is the definition of "racism" used by different people. I was involved in a discussion on another board a while back, and a not-insignificant number of people fully believe that it is impossible for a minority to be racist. That racial prejudice requires an overwhelming political power structure that works to benefit one side before it earns the title "racism". As an example, with the old All in the Family TV show, Archie Bunker was clearly a blatant racist. But his black neighbor (George Jefferson, whose character went on to the spinoff The Jeffersons), who was clearly just as racially prejudiced as Archie (if not more so), couldn't possibly be racist becasue he wasn't white. Mostly this view is advocated by minority bloggers and political science professors, but it's out there.
:fro:

Most people who think clearly use the dictionary definition of racism,
the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races

Countless psychological tests have been performed on countless people of all races and ethnic groups. Almost universally the conclusion comes back that all people subconsciously form opinions about someone based on nothing more than race. I.e., they think people in certain races all possess certain characteristics.

Oh, and I'm also an engineer :)

It's about time we got some logical people here haha.
