Second, good point, but we do use the 3rd row once in a while, so we decided that it is worth the trade.

Unfortunately, I completely agree with this. The cargo tray is a bit useless because it doesn't extend all the way to the back seat. I never leave my "cargo" just floating around in the middle to slide all around.

I haven't found a time when the sliding tray came in handy (and I have been looking hard).
 
It's all up to personal preference. My limited came with the tray and the plastic fold down stop piece at the back. While I hated it at first, thinking it was useless and took up needed space in the back, I have to admit that over time I've come to really like it. On numerous occassions I've been loading the back with heavy items and it's come in handy. The stop piece at the back has both good and bad points - good in that it keeps items from falling of the back when you slide it out and it creates a space directly behind the seat to put items. The bad - when the seats are down and you fold the piece over, it's not flat. A lot of folks on here have removed it. For me, it works.
 
Thanks all. Many informative points here. First time I've joined a forum BEFORE purchasing a vehicle. The third row takes up about 8" (height?), how about the tray? Does anyone have the voice activated (NV) nav without the third row. Can't build that on the Toyota site either. I'll probably put in my "preference" by the end of next week. Still waiting to hear from Toyota on ordering.

I have purchased ten new Toyotas since 1971. Is it possible to special order a 2012 4Runner? I am getting conflicting answers to this question from Oregon dealers. Thank you in advance.

Again, I saw plenty of those in the southeast. There was a 2011 Limited with sliding cargo, NV, and without third on the lot when I purchase mine. Maybe a road trip is in order.

What is this plastic stop piece you speak of? I'm not sure I have that.

When I want to use it, half my stuff falls off into the whole it creates when sliding out. The cargo net doesnt help, poor design, I would rather have a flat floor. I would not wait 6 weeks for this option but maybe for color and such.

I have the cargo divider on my tray, so things don't slide off the tray into the hole. Mine came with it, but I've found it's optional.
