First 4x4 truck

My '13 TE is my first 4wd vehicle. I was reading the manual and it said to drive 10 miles each month in 4wd to keep the gears lubricated. How do I go about doing this if I don't go wheeling and don't need to use 4wd?

Just stop, throw your trans to neutral, and switch to 4wd. Then drive, For 4lo, I'd say just go through a neighborhood or something.

I got that but it say not to use on dry pavement. I hear people say as long as you're going straight you'll be fine and some say even if going straight you still can bind the drive train.

Personally, I don't think it's as big an issue as the manual makes it out to be. I've gone months at a time in nothing but 2wd. Just to get some oil moving around though, I went out and found some dirt the other day and played around in 4wd for a while. Certainly didn't go 10 miles though.

Also, you can switch into and out of 4H at speeds up to 55 (I think). You don't need to put the transmission into neutral until you need 4Lo.

Just shift into 4hi and don't make any U turns or parking lot maneuvers.

FFS, where did all of this part time 4WD hysteria come from?

My friend has an 01 Yukon with about 300K miles on it, and drove it back from the west side of Colorado to southern Florida, then drove it around for another month, before realizing he was in 4hi the whole time. Want to know what happened? Nothing. Still shifts between 2hi/4hi/4lo and nothing broke.

To shift in to 4Hi there is no need to stop and go to neutral. Just slow to below 50mph and shift in to H4. Same thing for shifting back.

Alex, next time you are out just try it to see it's not that big of a deal. I would even try a gentle turn in Low so you know what everybody is talking about.

I don't have experience with this and 4Runners, but I guess it's the same for all 4WD cars - Mom's '11 Land Cruiser was put into 4WD for the first time in its life in like January and it made some nasty noises, but still engaged fine with no permanent damage as far as we know.
