First time owner - Backup camera question

I am new to this thread. Just bought my first 4runner... well technically its my wife's, but it feels like mine!

My first question... I just purchased and aftermarket in dash GPS unit, Kenwoo Excellon DNX6990HD. It has a coomposite video input for a backup camera. Any one here have experience installing a backup camera on a 5th Gen?

I would like to stay Kenwood and buy one of theirs, but I am open to any suggestions.

I used the stock camera which provides a standard RCA signal that should work with a Kenwood head unit (it did with my Alpine head unit). Depending on what stock head unit you had to start you can either get the camera signal and reverse signal at the head unit (stock nav head unit) or the rear view mirror (stock non-nav head unit).

Grab a copy of the Parts Manual (link is in the mods sticky thread). The camera is on page 155. I don't think it includes any wiring which you will have to fabricate & install yourself. So you'll want to get a copy of the wiring diagram (link is in the same sticky as the Parts Manual).

There are three different ones, a quick Google of the part numbers show prices from $110 to $180.

Whitetaile, this is NOT exactly what you are looking for, but I have a feeling you will find the product you need from these folks. This is where I bought my rear-view camera/mirror setup. Same folks who provide the OEM stuff for our vehicles and others. Maybe this will help, may not. Be Safe.

The item I bought is from Rostra Precision Inst. Inc. Model 250-8804 (Slim line 3.5 monitor)

I talked to Thomas in Tech Support, 1-800-732-4744 At Rostra. He told me this is the same kit that is sold to SE Toyota at the Port of Call, except this has the 3.5 inch screen vs the 2.4 inch screen Toyota uses, but everything else is the same.

Thomas recommended I call Brandon Disturbing, who is the sole distributer of Rostra Product. Contact “Joe” at Brandon, 1- 877-402-3944. I did so and he sold me this kit for 471.15 plus shipping. The dealer quoted me 665.00 for the same kit, using the 2.4 inch screen vs the 3.5.

You're right, I was looking at the wrong column for the call out ID. The stock camera is part #86790-35050. Way to expensive. In my opinion you're better off getting an after market camera. That shouldn't be too expensive if you don't get the mirror and just use the Kenwood head unit to display the image.

Why doesn't your 4runner have a rear view camera already? I thought they all had one, and the only difference was the display location?

Mine is a 2012. They may have changed to include the camera on all in 2013.

Audiovox CAM330 Camera and LCDM40 Rearview Mirror with 4" Screen. But if your system has Video In you can use that instead of the Rearview Mirror. The camera also came with a license plate mount if you want it lower.

Thanks PhillyD. Was the wire routing easy? Did you have to drill any holes? Did the rbber grommet come with the camera? Anything else I need to know?

Will be much easier for you since you are going into your new GPS but otherwise pretty straight forward. It depends where you mount but I would think drilling will be in your future.

You could also cehck out wireless rear view cams.
