Flowmaster Question

It has spent more time in mud and water than most dedicated mud trucks.

I can say the same for my friend who has 2 of them on his '89 sierra, they've been on for 10 years now with no signs of rust, they were even held on with chicken wire for a year or two (which should have scratched them well enough to expose oxidizable metal).

Well maybe I am wrong then; that is just what I was told by 2 exhaust shops locally. But hey they could be biased

Nothing against the flowmaster, but I've read a lot saying they are for sound only, not much if any performance. I know nothing will be "much" but there are plenty of mufflers that will give better airflow than the flowmaster.

it is not going to be louder than how mine is dumped for sure and the flowmaster is definitely more prone to the "droning" sound when it is dumped under the vehicle

autbond- what made you want to dump the pipe right after the muffler? and do you have a link to hte muffler you got? if you dump it right after the muffler will it be louder then taking the pipe all the way to the back?

Yes, it would def not be as loud because the longer the pipe always means not as loud. I cut it out there because I hate the way any pipes look out the back. I think the truck looks better with no pipe showing at all and it sounds good; and it was easier haha
 
okay just checking, and i want a pretty aggressive tone, what muffler should i get, i dont care about if its very loud on the inside. also would be nice if its cheap, i will prob dump it too cause i am undecided on where i would want it to go haha
 
^x2 I had bent the stock one that came out the back; then I just cut off the resonator on the rear so the stock pipe was dumping right at the rear axle and then I got the magnaflow. I will try to do a little video of the sound
 
Wow, lots of great info in this thread. I have been debating a cheap exhaust upgrade, and really wanted the 50 series Flowmaster, but I'm beginning to rethink now. I think I'll sit back and see how some of these turn out.
 
yeah, keep the discussion going guys, I'm looking at Dynomax, Thrush, and Borla for now. Again I'm not wanting lound at highway speeds, just when I get ont the gas. Looks like Flowmaster is out as it doesn't offer much/any performance. Looking more and more towards the Borla muffler only and routed back by the mudflap. That should help tone it down a bit as well.

I have the flowmaster super 44, I like it....no drone at all.
Sounds good when you stomp on the gas, sounds best between about 1100 and 2000 rpm.
So you can really hear it when your mostly city/trail driving.
And its not annoying at all when your on the freeway.

flowmaster 40 series would be for the loud and cheap route for sure, Loud and overtime annoying if cut out underneath the truck because of the drone

If you want LOUD and CHEAP, get a Flowmaster Super 10 One Chamber. They are LOUD & rumble the ground, at about 6" long, it's barely even a muffler. it's the next loudest thing to straight pipes. I've never heard one on any thing besides GM V8s but DAMN they sound good on those. My friend hassuper 10s, no cats, true duals, w/ turndowns on the muffler on his '89 Z and it is the best sounding exhaust (from a stock motor) I have ever heard.

I had a super 10 w/ turndown put on my Z for $60 installed. It sounded GOOD too. It was easy for my friends (even female friends who usually don't distinguish b/n exhaust sounds) to recognize my truck from almost a mile away (in town). I'm not 100% sure they're street legal but I had mine 8 years without getting pulled over (at least not for the muff). The super 44 & 40 series are both 2 chambers.
 
Found a local shop that has Magnaflow's in stock that will fit. I'm going w/ them because 1. they are cheap 2. they are quiet 3. good air flow.
If it's not loud enough or falls apart I can get a different one at that point and not have lost much money!!
 
When you getting it installed? Which shop? I'm wanting one, but the boss is against it (she didn't care much for the Flowmaster's I had on my old Mustang). We'll have to check yours out when done, and if it's not too loud we may go with the same setup. Either way, I'm definitely getting the resonator cut off, and probably dumped behind the rear axle, just need to find a shop to do it.
 
Buddy's muffler shop in Russellville has them in stock. I'm going to route to the rear side so I avoid any drone in the cabin. I'll let you know how it turns out. Call me next time you're in town and you can hear it!
