flowmaster vs magnaflow

i know these types of topics have been hashed over many times, but i still cant decide whether to get a magnaflow or flowmaster because everyone seems to really like what they have. is there a reason to choose one over the other (durability/price/sound retention??) or is it all a matter of personal preference?

a shop quoted me 90 bucks for a flowmaster and 100 for a magnaflow (including install) but that $10 difference still has me on the fence. any help would be appreciated :)

Including install??? Smokin' deal either way. Most shops will run about $250 installed for something like that.

I've had both, and like both. On my F150, I had a Flowmaster 40 series and it sounded great. Deep, low, but not obnoxious. If you ever plan to add more power, I'd go with the Magnaflow as the Flowmasters have proven restrictive on many vehicles.
 
thanks weedo, i did a search on google for flowmaster vs magnaflow and what you said is pretty much what others have said too. i think magnaflow it is!
 
Let us know how it sounds! Which Magnaflow # are they recommending for you? I want to do the same eventually (I have the V8 though). It's just WAY too quiet right now!
 
they didnt say which magnaflow part because i only asked for pricing. now that i think about it though, it does sound a little shady. $100 is pretty cheap considering that it seems like most people are paying about $130-$140 for a muffler job. another shop had quoted me $150 for a flowmaster 50. i'm gonna stop by the place after work if their still open to see what its all about.
 
well i got the magnaflow installed today for $130, stainless steel. the aluminum was $100. as for the muffler, i'm some what disapointed. i can totally hear the muffler inside the cabin, but it doesnt seem as loud outside. ive read the resonator muffles the sound a bit so i'm gonna look into cutting that off.

oh yea, and the stock muffler is huge! its almost 4 times the size of the magnaflow.
 
well got the resonator chopped off today. the difference is definetly noticeable, but it wasn't as big of a change as i had imagined. none the less, im still happy with the outcome. i'll post some pics @ work if i get the chance.
 
Keep in mind you have to break in the new muffler. Its going to sound quiet when you first get it, when I got my Magnaflow on my Sierra a couple years ago I couldn't really even tell a difference. When I sold it a few months later, it was straight up loud. Give it at least a month or so before you decide its too quiet, trust me. :)
 
i wanted a dual tip, sorta like what another member on here has (momo75 i think) but i couldnt find one that wasnt huge. the one i ended up choosing is stainless steel, double walled and i like it :D

oh yea, does anybody know whats the difference between a 4x9 and 5X8 muffler besides size? i got the 4X9 magnaflow but only realized afterwards that most people have the 5x8.

i'm just impatient, hehe. instead of listening to the radio now i roll down the windows so i can hear my truck. my gf thinks im crazy :p . this is all new to me so im sure when the novelty of having a muffler wears off ill roll up my windows and be "normal" again.
 
i tried taking a sound clip using my laptop last night but the results were disapointing. one i couldnt get the microphone in the right position, second i think the exhaust might be too quiet for the mic to pick up :mad: . anyways, ill try again over the weekend, planning on driving on some dirt :)
 
I love my Flowmaster 40 D. Top that with the K&N Drop IN,

AND

4" Dekplate mod.

Now my 4Runner sound smooth, like a Harley. I hear car alarms chirping when I pass by them. I like that.

click on the link and the quicktime vid should open in the window if you have quicktime installed. picture32 is the flowmaster, 33 is the magnaflow as described before. both vids are about 2mbs.

this should work as i just tried it from my friends house and the vids were able to download. dont know how long i can keep them up there for so enjoy it while it lasts.
