Foam: Sound, Vibration, Wind Howl or....?

Hope everyone is safe and healthy today. Lots of smoke still in the air up here in Vancouver.

Either way, I'm in the process of doing the storage compartment mod and want to remove this Foam Cube that was jammed into the rear panel above the wheel well.

I'm going to line the entire storage area with a foil backed butyl layer (dynamat, kilmat, fatmat, etc. type stuff) plus a layer of heavy fabric over it.

Is the Foam Cube for reducing sound, vibration or wind howl? So, the real question is, will the butyl layer and fabric be a suitable replacement for what the foam was doing?

Did my interior earlier this year, mine had foam stuffed in a few places that I beleive is for sound absorbtion. After matting as for as I could in that area on both sides I stuffed a 4' x 4' x 2" piece of foam into that area on both sides for the same reason.

Layer of butyl will be much better than a solitary chunk of foam. Get rid of it and don't sweat it.

JZiggy, have you put butyl into this area without replacing the foam? Any negative consequences like increased noise, dust, etc.?

T4topher, care to expand on the exclamation? I assume you're kidding but if you've done this mod and removed the foam with consequence please explain.

I don't have and never had that piece of foam. That whole area is open after the "cargo area mod" as well and I currently store a soft first aid kit in that approximate area.

Lol I was kidding, butyl will definitely be better than the foam. You’ll be fine, just save the foam and worst comes to worst just glue that sucker back in there. I never had that piece of foam in my truck either.. might have been placed there by a previous owner.

I appreciate your perspective. The reason for my post is because I want to remove that foam for the space. It's there for a reason and was there since new. Butyl will help with sound but not necessarily closing off a space where air/dust can get through in the area where the foam was plugging. When I'm backcountry I travel on very dusty roads and when I removed the whole panel as part of the mod the entire area was caked with dust I imagine from the condensation tube drain hole but maybe from other areas. I don't want to increase the dust!

I'm still curious if anyone knows if this foam is for sound or blocking air/dust?
