FOUND: Missing nut; where does it go?

Nothing personal towards any of the post owners on this thread, but that is NOT a 21 mm nut. Nuts and bolts are identified by the "thread" size, followed by the thread pitch(example- 12mm 1.5), not the wrench size.

If I'm talking about the thread, or specifying the size, on a metric bolt or nut, I'll write M12-1.5, not 12mm 1.5. If I see '21mm nut' with a picture of the 21mm socket next to it, I can make the intuitive leap that he is talking about the wrench size. Of course, I don't run around with 'Engineer' in my screen name.

Can we start telling engineer jokes??

(just kidding... IBE and I are a team, lately, on electrical stuff.)

It's more of a mathematician joke, but my perennial favorite:

A physicist, engineer and mathematician are all asked the question, is it better to have a wife, or a mistress?

Do these look like the nut; see the two horizontal 'through' bolts holding the steering knuckle. Also, consider the shape...

Here's the same strut removed. Check the size of that socket, gotta be at least 21mm.

And a look of the shaft (below), it's huge!

I think it could be any one of those nuts. best!

I just googled "3'rd gen 4Runner suspension system images" and thought that those might be like my previous 4Runner's shocks ('98); really couldn't rmbr exactly what they looked like from under the hood. :sorry:

If I recall correctly ...... The nut one replaces after changing out the transfer case seal is pretty big. Its recommended that you replace the nut instead of reusing it. Could have been placed there during the service and forgotten. Assuming the OP 4Runner is 4wd.

Plus, the nut for the t-case output shaft has to be staked. Can't stake that nut. To big. Giggidy.

If you go through all the pages of my build thread and look at all of the interior and exterior things I've replaced (a lot of them) I've not encountered a single 21mm nut or bolt (wrench size).

I've found 22mm on the main steering rack bolt, and on the lower control arms I think, 24mm on the upper light racing nut, and even 36mm on my 97 4runner original axles but most everything else has been either 19mm, 17mm, 14mm, 12mm or 10mm.

No guesses here but watching out of curiosity.

Yeah yeah, we know. It's alot easier to refer to the socket size though, since that is very easy to measure, and is in fact what the OP referred to. And in all fairness, my comment is valid for what I said, I don't think that Toyota used a nut that "is to be engaged by a 21mm socket" (see how stupid that sounds, that's how you sound :blah that was a lock nut.

And just to fend off the misunderstanding, the smilies mean that was lighthearted ribbing, not me calling you a pedantic douche.

I knew that, but of course, we all have our douche bag moments, pedantic or not. I just needed to say it because it was bugging me. I'm not even an actual engineer! It's just the eye ball part of me that is a douche!

Geez... If I were going to heckle, I would have given myself a hard time for calling a nut a bolt... but I guess your point is just as silly and accurate.

Pick my battles, eh? I hadn't measured the nut up appropriately, but had snapped the picture so I'd remember what size it was for later when I posted. Hopefully the forum-gods will forgive me for talking down to a lower denominator; I think most knew where I was headed with the post.
