From Plastidip to Real Paint?

If i have missed it, i apologize, flame me as much as necessary.

I just hit my front fascia with a little of the Dip, and i think it looks decent. I plan on letting it grow on me for the rest of the summer, and if it does, i can see me going ahead and permanently painting it this way.

I was wondering, has anyone else done this...gone from the temp tattoo of plastidip to the perm coloration of actually painting the front.


and i know about you guys who have gone full monte and swapped out the SR5 or Trail fronts for TRD Pro 'T O Y O T A' lettering and blackness...

just curious...i know im not smart enough to be the first to have thought of, and contemplated doing this...

I used high temp paint and rattle canned it.... looked great. 3 weeks later theres patches missing. 5 weeks later its back to the way it was.

Ok... cleaned it and hit it again. No lie back to the way it looked again...

mind you again just doing what I have done in the past with my cars - rattle can 12 minute driveway job.

I used high temp spray paint and it's holding up after a couple thousand miles. I sanded and cleaned it before spraying.

Wet sanded mine a few months ago and hit it with high temp grill paint. Its holding up wiyhout majot issues. A few chips popped up on the inside of the pipe, eventially they will blacken with soot.

Painted my exhaust pipe over two months ago and it still looks great. I just sanded the rust/dirt off, washed it clean and used High Heat Engine block spray paint.

Did the same thing on my 4Runner 9 months ago and I liked it. But, I noticed that after a few months, it started peeling due to all the bugs hits and it and road debris. Later this summer I'm going to remove the plastic dip and paint it with some Krylon Plastic spray paint.

[MENTION=117500]mnofpeace[/MENTION] I have done it. plastic dipped the hood scoop insert, then got tired of it and had it painted. have dipped the front and rear valences as well, and I plan on painting them too. I found the dip to be a PITA to get off. just took it to a paint shop and they blasted it and painted it. Dip is so easy to use, but I'm done with it. The dip on the front valence gets lots of road abuse, and there's just nothing you can do to make it right, except add more dip.

Paint is a million times better. I had my Trail valences dipped and maintaining them and washing them was a pain. Dip stays texturized so any friction will fear and peel it. Makes cleaning it a tedious process. I pulled my valences off, dropped them at my local paint shop, and three days and $50 later I had black painted ones. They look great and hold up 1000x better to abuse

Thanks guys...thats what i wanted to know...

I have some solid painting experience painting my racing motorcycles over the years...so doing the same to the Runner shouldnt be too much of a problem...as was said earlier, its also about the type of paint you use...and i will surely choose wisely.

Ill let the 'dip' sit for now...but i can see perm-painting it within the next 2 or 3 months, for sure...

I plastidipped my fenders and front just like you did a year ago. I am repainting all of it with Rustoleum Professional paint in the upcoming weeks. I have heard from a couple friends that it is the way to go. I'm sanding the parts a little bit first and priming them with Rustoelum primer.

Funny, I was just talking to a buddy who does body work about taking my stock fender flares from dip to permanent paint.

It sounds like it's gonna be a few hundred dollars plus a few days without my DD if I have it professionally done, so I'm interested to see / hear more results of anyone who has tackled it (that is, painting any of the plastic) themselves.
