I used Redline synthetic in the rear diff. A little pricey, but no big deal if you only do every 50K or so.

A few tips :
On the rear diff, use a 6 pt 24mm or 15/16 socket. A 12 pt socket will strip the plug.
After filling the diffs, drive around the block and check the fluid and add more as needed. Driving allows the fluid to fully fill out the diff. My diffs always hold a few more ounces after doing this.

It took me 1/2 an hour to find this thread.:mmph: Bumping to the first page. Going to do my T/C and front Diff this weekend. At 48.5k miles.
I did lots of dusty 4WD this past year.
Going with the Delvac again.

you seem to have a lot more gaskets in there. For the t case? Also did you use the same oil in the both diffs and the t case?

I just checked my rear diff after less than 5000 miles. Black! I do alot of off roading. Going to change it soon as the dealer opens. They said their 80W90 is only $5.50 a quart. Thanks for the thread. May have saved my gears.

When Toyota tells you to, its in the manual. ( I would tell you but don't recall the exact mileage)

Firstly, great write up.
I referenced this post continually while preparing for and performing this yesterday.
All in all, this was super simple.
Just to help others venturing into this task, I have a couple comments to add:
Make sure you have a 10mm Allen wrench. I assumed I did because I have no less than 4 sets of allen wrenches lying around. BUT, (I'm sure I'm showing my naivety here) a 10mm wrench is bigger than what's included in any of those sets and I had to run to the hardware store after I dropped the front skid.
Also make sure you have a shallow 24mm socket. The one I got with my set (24mm was also larger than anything I had just laying around) was too tall/long to fit between the diff and the rear sway bar. Yep, I had to run to the store AGAIN. Haha.
Next time I do this I'll lay copious amounts of cardboard down to prevent spillage from hitting my paver driveway.

Bumping to the first page for reference. Approx 38k on my rear dif fluid. It seems like a good time to change again since I expect a busy Spring/Summer. I'll be using Delvac again.
24mm or 5/16" socket.
2.75 to 2.85 US qts (Trail)
2 - 12157-10010 Silver washer/gasket
36ft·lb

First checked for leaks then cleaned up around the bolts. Then pulled the filler bolt. It came undone easy with a tap of the palm on my big breaker bar. I forgot the dif gets pressurized so there's a hissing sound. I checked the level with a wood dowel and it's right where it should be. Fluid is very clean looking but I'm here so I might as well change it.
Drain bolt was easy to remove as well. Hardly any gunk on the magnet compared to the first change.
I cleaned up the bolts then replaced the washers. 15mins later and the fluid is still draining.

Fluid finally stopped dripping. Drain bolt was reinstalled and torqued to 36ft-lb.
New Delvac pumped in. Slightly over 3 qts go figure. Same as drain amount it turns out.
I took a pic after three fillings and decided it was close enough to full. 0 to -5mm is the spec. Fill bolt reinstalled and torqued. Old oil will go to Walmart. Time for chorizo and eggs.

So, I thought I should inform everyone that Redline Oils is shortchanging their customers. 3 "quarts" of Redline 75w85 does not fill a rear diff on a 5th gen 4Runner. In fact, it took most of a 4th "quart" to do it, and after driving a few miles, it took 4 full Redline "quarts" to fill my rear diff.
I cannot remember the last time I was this upset about something, as it rendered my car inoperable for over a week while I made enough of a fuss to get the 4th quart overnighted to me for free.
I will never use a Redline product again, and will do everything I can to ruin their name. They are liars. Based on this experience, I am draining their fluid tomorrow and replacing it with something from someone who can at least be honest about the quantity of product sold.
I am disgusted with Redline and the Pennzoil Group. I piss on you from a considerable height.
