Thanks for the vote of confidence.

ABSOLUTELY, I'm shipping my runner back from Germany. I will of course remove the speaker box/flooring from the rear and the HU, rear movie screen, and rims, but it will be shipped on the boat to the port nearest my next base. As of right now, I don't know where that will be, but I do know I'll receive my next assignment in March 05.
 
Cool. Do you have to shell out the cash for that or does the military take care of it? Just curious.
 
The military authorized me to bring 1 vehicle to Germany, so I can bring 1 back. I sold my 2000 Grand Cherokee last year to save up for this baby.
 
it appears from your pics that you found adapters to plug in to the OEM harness and then mated those leads with the HU wiring. Is this so? I assume you also had a JBL 6-disk HU....I didn't think anyone made these adapters for the JBL setup
 
Dude, I had the single disc toyota HU with no JBL. I just bought the standard Toyota wire harness and it worked perfectly. I can't help you if you have the 6-disc version. Sorry.

If you don't mind me asking, how tall is your false floor? Was that enough room to mount everything, or do you wish you made it taller?
 
I'll check today, but my first guess would be around 4". You can look at the pics to get a good idea of the height...just look at the front tie down loops or the wheel covers.

There is plenty of room because as you could see, all of my cables were secured to the underside of the box/floor. The only free cables are the two from the DSP to the HU.

Can you explain the role of the DSP unit? I have seen people use them to take a 2 channel source and synthisize a 5.1 sound, but you apparantly are not doing that. Is that an optical connection (or some other special cable?) between the HU and the DSP, or did it need 4 RCAs?

I've been thinking about stereo upgrades to my 4Runner, and have been wondering how I could get a decent 6X9 speaker. I guess if you really want great drivers for the front door, the only solution is to convert to 6.5 round as you demonstrated.

You're very welcome...I can't think of any career I'd rather have.

As for the install, my DSP (digital sound processor) performs the same function a home stereo DSP does. In my specific case, it accepts the encoded audio bitsteam from my head unit then decodes it to provide either Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Surround standard 2-channel audio to my amps. The audio then travels via short RCA interconnects to the amps. It also provides almost 5v of audio power versus 2 from head unit, which helps provide the cleanest signal to my amps. The fiber cable, came with the DSP, but aside from the connectors is no different than the fiber you may use on your home DVD player.

As for the speakers, 6X9s will fit in the front...in fact, the stock speakers are 6X9s. I chose the 6.5s because I wanted separate components.

Good luck with whatever you choose, but just be sure to investigate all of you options and DON'T SETTLE.

That is a sick setup! I am truly jealous! I think you have a calling in the real world once your hang up your hat in the service. I know for sure that I'll be standing in line as one of your first customers.

Mind if I ask where you got stationed in '05? I'm at WPAFB.

Speaker covers

Do you need to remove the door panels if your not modifing the 6x9 bracket....i would like to just poped the screens off if possible.........thanks

Pop off the decorative panel from behind the door handle and remove the screw behind it. Pop off the trim on the insde of the door up by the mirror. Pop off the armrest pad, it just pushes into place so a gentle tug will do it. Then gently pry the door panel away from the door.

Mock up sizes are 6X9 front and 6.5" in the rear doors. The tweeters are about 2.5" but it's been awhile and I can't remember for sure.

You'll have to make or buy an adapter for the front speakers and the rears fit right in. I didn't change the tweeters in mine but I can say the Polk Audio speakers I put in are terrific. I also have the 160 watt Scion Pioneer head unit which is a direct swap for the stock T4R unit. Steering wheel controls and all.
