FYI - Hidden winch install caused power steering failure

This was definitely a mistake on my end, but everyone who's installed the hidden winch plate should check this as well.

I was making a quick trip home from college Thursday night and ended up getting caught in a huge traffic jam on I-83 coming out of southern PA (there was an 11 car pile up that closed both north and south bound lanes for several hours). I got off of the highway and attempted to make it home through some backroads but ended up sitting there just as long. After I had been sitting for about 90 minutes a passing truck driver caught my attention and said I was blowing anti-freeze all over the road. There was no way I could pull off on the section of road where I was so I checked all my gauges (temp was fine), no warning lights, couldn't see any fluid leaking in the rearview cam, I even pulled out my OBDII cord from the center console and used my iPhone to run the codes while I was sitting in traffic just to see what was up. Everything seemed fine so I was crawling in traffic for another 15 minutes. I didn't notice what was wrong until the traffic cleared about 10 minutes later and I had to make my first turn, sure enough my power steering was toast.

I pulled over the check under the hood and the reservoir was empty. I didn't see any obvious leaks so I drove to a close auto shop and got some fluid to refill it. After it was full I turned the car back on and watched the fluid blow out completely under the driver side headlight. After that
I knew exactly what it was. Against my better judgement I drove the 10miles home on a dry pump to get to my workshop and found this:

This is from when I bent the pipe back for the winch to be installed. I knew the drivers side was a little tight, but thought it should be fine. Apparently this stressed it enough that it eventually gave way.

Here is a before and after shot of the pipe and hose where it broke when I was installing the winch plate.

BEFORE - Here you can see it isn't stressed at all:

AFTER - You can see I have introduced an unnecessary bend in the hose by bending the pipe back, and this is where it failed - I should have bent the pipe a little and made sure the hose wasn't as stressed:

I made it to our local hardware store about 10 minutes before they closed and picked up a replacement. I got a longer hose so it would reduce stress on the hard bend where it failed before. It was a pretty quick fix and I managed to get the old one off and the new one on without even dropping the bumper. Took about an hour total. When I refiled the system it drank a good amount of PS fluid before it leveled off. After it did level off I had a nice screech coming from the PS pump (under the air intake) that lasted for about 10 minutes. I was worried that I burned out the bump by driving about 15 miles with an empty system. The noise eventually went away and it was been normal ever since.

Yikes! You got lucky.

How long of a replacement did you get. And how do you change it with the bumper on?

Nice plate and winch btw. :wink2: you scared the hell out of me when I read the title and the author.

I replaced it with a 1ft long section. Originally it was probably 7-8 inches so I got a lot more room to work it around the bend.

And it would a lot easier to access with the bumper off, but I didn't have the time to do that (soCal's bracket has taken removing the bumper cover from a 10 minute job to a 45 minute job). So I had decent access from underneath and just slowly worked it free.

Haha my bad! It is a great winch and plate

Glad you got away relatively unscathed financially on this. For reference, if you DO want to fry your $400 ps pump, hit the union joint with something hard, either a hammer or a shock tower gusset will do the trick! I am 2 for 2 with that method...

Wow thanks for the heads up, I wondered about possible consequences of the additional stress on the pipe when I had to bend the pipe during the install. I did bend the surrounding metal pipes to try and ease the tension on that bend that failed on you. Maybe a thorough install of the budbuilt hidden winch mount would include replacing that flexible hose with a longer section at the time the mount is put in.

Agreed, it would literally be about a 10 minute job if you had the bumper off and had easy access to the pipe. Definitely something else to do when adding the plate on.

this was a terrible accident! took me over 2 hours to get home. Surprised I didn't spot you again. Glad you didn't get stranded though. Pics of the accident (not mine) because it was that insane. Luckily no one died, which is shocking when you see these:

Quick question, how doe the bracket increase the time of removing the bumper?

That is insane! If I saw that in a movie, I wouldn't believe it..

I woulda' pooped a brick if i was in that blue car! Thankfully everyone is OK!

Anyone have an idea what kind of car that little blue sedan is? That driver is lucky to be alive. Noticed that the entire rear section is gone.

Holy Hell!

About the bend. Was that a rubber tube or medal? I could not tell from the pic.

If medal did you use a pipe bender when doing this install. That is the only thing I was thinking. If it is rubber hose I'm a little shocked. Love the winch though. It looks mean!

Yea, it was insane. You wouldn't have spotted me, I got off the Loganville exit on 83 and headed down backroads from there. It was nuts though.

The bracket attaches where there used to be clips. So instead of popping off 4 clips you have to reach under and take out about 5-6 bolts. Plus I mounted my lights more forward than most, so my lights actually are attached to the bracket and the bumper cover as well. It's a lot of unscrewing in tight places that adds to the time.

It's both. The section that runs past the radiator is metal, but the section that broke is rubber.
