Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

I see 285/70/17 is in the yellow.... Has anyone put this size on without a lift and had success without having to modify the wheel wells? I eventually want to put a lift on the vehicle but I am going to have to do tires first. Would a 275 be better for stock?

Who knows, I have a 2" lift with FN 17x8 wheels and I rub with 275s at full lock.

It depends on alignment. All 4runners are slightly different. The alignment moves the lower control arm slightly and it might barely rub or it might not at all.

With IFS a lift does not change tire fitment. Unless you're going to long travel or a bracket lift (6" lift), all tires will fit the same. A 3 inch lift makes no difference at all.

And at least for me - 285s fit stock on stock wheels with very minimal rub on the front bumper that was easily fixed with minor plastic cutting. If you change wheels to higher offset - expect rubbing.

I am going 275/70/17 BFG All Terrain KO2s today on TRD Pro wheels. The only thing I have added is the Toytec front 1 inch level for TRD Pros. I will let you know how they fit after I pick it up.

285s would likely rub, 275s probably not. If you are mounting on TRD Pro wheels, 285s will almost surely rub, and 275s will likely rub (with no lift).

I think 275s are a better option for stock, but your mileage may vary.

275/70/17 BFGs went on great. No rubbing issues and the ride is much better. 10/10 would buy again (but I do have only 100 miles on them:high5:)

Selling 20 inch 5th gen 4runner wheels from a 2014 limited. Tires are michelin 305/50/r20's. Located in scottsdale az. Wheels are in perfect shape and have zero scratches or flaws. Asking $800 call / text 480.307.0399 if interested.

Dude there is a for sale section

Finally got my tires mounted and installed. 275/60/20 Cooper Discovery H/T Plus on Limited 20" wheels.

The intent was for a set of street tires. For that they're great at first drive. Super quiet and smooth on the highway. Like the OEM tires, but 33" tall. No rubbing so far - I have trimmed mud flaps but untrimmed bumper and no BMC.

They're a bit taller and narrower than 285/70/17 Toyo AT2s I will keep as trail tires on the OEM wheels.

The Limited wheels are kinda odd in that they measure close to 7.5" wide (inside bead seat to bead seat) but are stamped as a 7.0 width wheel. Not sure what's up with that. Also they do sit a bit further out than the Trail wheels.

Oh - and $400 for wheels and the tires were from Amazon for $124 ea. $60 to mount and balance and $30 for a 2nd set of TPMS. Haven't bough a programmer yet.

If then had more street tread tires in a 33ish size for 17's I'd rather have 17's for comfort. Like a street tread 255/80/17. But these are as close as I could get.

Nope, its barely noticeable. I will probably move to do that once I switch over to 285s.

I think it'll pretty much be required at 285. I just noticed slight rub while braking in reverse at full right lock. Took over 500 miles to experience it though. So a bit more fender trimming for me.

I just put on Falken Wildpeak AT3 in 265/70/17 (32"x10.5" according to the stamping on the tire) on some Pro Comp 17x8, 4.5" BS, 0 offset wheels on a stock 2012 Limited and get some minor rubbing at full lock. Kind of strange.

The Falkens are a huge tire, 31.9" I believe compared to quite a few as low as 31.4".

I had to do a lot of trimming and heat gun my fenders with mine on my SCS wheels (which in all fairness, are 8.5" which makes it worse). I actually wonder if they run a bit bigger than Falken even cites to be honest.

I still rub at a near full lock on the fenders I believe slightly, but have been too lazy to go deal with it since a lift is in my relatively near future.

So many factors at play......I run 275/75/17 BFG's on Mamba M-14's in 17x9 and was good without spacers.......added spacers (1.25) and had to do a body mount chop and cut clearance holes in the mudflaps inside the fender to keep the exterior flaps. Now I could run 285's no problem! Hardest part was just pulling the trigger on the sawzall to commit! LOL!:wow2:

Minor rubbing on front fender liner and mud flap. Not the end of the world, just unexpected.

Take out the 2 bolts on the bottom front of the liner where it meets the bumper. Push the liner forward, put the bolts back in. Then have an alignment done and get 1* caster, rubbing likely solved. I ran a 285/70/17 with no lift and had zero rubbing on the bumper unless I was at full lock in reverse only. I'm now lifted but still, you shouldn't have rubbing unless you have some deep wheels. Can you post a picture? Pictures in mine before the lift.

I'm always here to save the noobs from getting railed on! People like you to use the search function before asking a beginner question! Anyway, you will be fine at stock size KO2's or Duratracs!

Thanks. Follow up question..

With 265/75/16 or 265/70/17, do you know the best offset/backspace to get it to have a wider stance with minimal/no rubbing?

do a 4 inch lift kit is enough for 33s

The Toytec 3" is enough to run a 285/70/17 issue free on the right wheel.
