Once again I have to agree with LINY. It's amazing how much cheaper body work gets when you ask them to cut corners. I would still try to avoid body fillers if at all possible though, that was a good call on your part

Sorry to hear about the damage, but I would say find out what the insurance will give you and go from there. Definitely go with the CBI though, then if this happens again it wont be much of a problem lol.

Good idea on asking the body shop to quote you for less detailed work too!

just wondering, with the quote you got, did that body shop know insurance was paying? if so, they typically jack up the price. Since you own your truck free and clear, insurance will just cut you a check. I would find a shop and tell them you are a cash buyer, you may get a completely different quote.

Wouldn't you want the higher estimate? After paying your deductible, the rest would be for you to do with what you want.

You would want a higher estimate to submit to insurance, but then you would want to find another shop and get a quote without insurance when you are ready to have the work done. Hope that makes sense?

They actually asked me for the policy # of the girl that hit me so they could work "directly" with the insurance co., but I told them I didn't bring that with me. According to her insurance, I'm not required to get an estimate, the adjuster will determine on his own what the cost to fix will be and what the check is made out for. I just got an estimate so if the insurance co. tries to low ball me, at least I'll be able to whip it out and show them that it will cost this much according to a local body shop.

Get a few estimates from different shops. Don't rely on the appraiser estmate as it really is a crap shoot. Tell the shop that insurance is paying for it and that you want all OEM parts. Show these estimates to the insurance company. They may balk, but you will prevail if you stay firm.

When you get your insurance check based off the higher amount, take it to a shop and tell them that you're paying out of pocket (customer pay). The price will be cheaper and you can pocket the difference.

Remember: the insurance company cannot force you to go to a particular shop. That's called steering and is illegal.

IMO find someone that does custom body work not a coliision center you can get it done much cheaper if they are willing to do it. I backed in to a tree and did pretty much the same if not a worse and found a shop to do it for $1500

UPDATE:
So I got a check from the insurance company this week, finally! And of course, they tried to screw me at 1st. The original estimate was for almost $2800 for a qtr panel replacement. Then they made me go to an "approved" body shop and they estimated the labor at a ridiculous 8 hours to do the entire job - R&R bumper and qtr panel, pounding, welding, filling, sanding, repainting, everything - in 8 hours!! The check they were going to send me was for only $1300.

I told them to not send the check, I would have to fight them on this so they sent up an adjuster to re-estimate my truck. The adjuster was actually very cool and he said that he can't approve the replacement of the panel, but he agreed that 8 hours for the whole job was ret*rded. He upped the labor hours to about 19 and re-rated some of the parts and cut me a check for right under $2000 and I'm content with that!

I have a buddy who's gonna pull it all out for a couple hundred and another buddy who'll paint it for another $100 or so. So I'll have about $1600 left. I think today I'm gonna get some Maxxis Bighorns in the 255/85 flavor with some new Cragar Soft 8 wheels. The rest I'm going to put as a down payment on a new CBI bumper, but it's about a 3 month wait so it'll be a while before it's on.....

Alright, as said earlier the tires and wheels are on the way and I just right now put a deposit down on the CBI bumper!!! Won't be ready till August or so, but I already can't wait! :jump: arty: :jump:

If you (or I) can find me a good deal on a used Armorology, I'll still sell you the ARB xskydivingdudex!
