Not really a 4Runner question but are the speed limits in Canada super strictly enforced? I ask this because when tourists come here to Florida they usually stay just under the speed limit and will not budge. Where as us Locals just kind of take it as a "suggested speed". I am not wanting to start a bash tourist drivers thread but just curious about how it is enforced there.

For the most part, yes they are enforced. There are always exceptions like the 401 around Toronto where people FLY, and it also varies by province as far as the penalties associated with speeding tickets, but for the most part travelling 10-15% above the posted limit is the norm I'd say, above that and you're going to get dinged eventually.

Can't say why they'd be travelling just below the posted limit in Florida though, maybe there's lots to see if you're not from there?

Outside the urban area, the speed limits in Atlantic Canada are 110kph (68mph). I typically do 125 (77mph) and the rule of thumb seems to be if you keep it under 20kph (12mph) over the limit you should be fine. I have gone through speed traps 20kph over the limit and been fine. 30kph over I'm sure would be a ticket.

I find Quebecers drive slow and I find Floridians drive slow. People from Toronto drive fast, as do those in Massachusetts. When I drove to DC a couple of years ago I rarely got passed and I was typically doing 75mph. Most people along I95 seemed to do 65-70mph.

Anyway, the general perception is that speed limits in the US are more strictly enforced than they are in Canada. I've heard of people getting pulled over for doing 5mph over the limit in places like New Jersey and New Hampshire.

you might have heard of it, but getting stopped in NH for only 5mph over is extremely unlikely. the ma$$hole$ and vermonters typically cruise along at over 70. i'd guess somewhere around 50% of the interstate drivers are going 70-plus, and the percentage stopped for speeding is less than 1%.

5MPH over in NJ? Sounds like you know some unlucky people.
