GVWR question - between GX and 4Runner

I heard that Toyota had to update the GVWR of the GX470 through a recall on its 2003 models. Its GVWR is now 6000 pounds enabling it to qualify for a tax writeoff.

Is there a reason as to why the GX's GVWR is higher than the 4Runner's, even for those with 4-wheel drive and V-8's? What kind of things were added onto the GX that made it heavier than the 4Runner?

(Curb weight is 4740 for the GX. V8 Sport 4x4's have a curb weight of 4515; Limited 4x4 V-8's have a curb weight of 4495. They have GVWR's of 5710).

Just to name a few things that may add weight to GX:

1. Adjustable shocks with computer hardware
2. Sound dampening (this is probably the biggest weight)
3. Laminated window (for sound insulation)
4. MarK Levinson sound system (minimal weight at best)
5. Third row seating (optional equipment)
6. Taller (maybe they use more steel to reinforce roof)
7. More standard features (side curtain airbags)

#5-7 is pretty much a guess by me.

That is the maximum weight the vehicle can carry with a full payload and passengers, I think?

With Bush's tax plan.. It is an incentive to help out small business owners.. It kinda works like this, if you own a small business and you buy a veh. over 6000 pounds I guess you can say you use that veh. for the business and can write off part of it and its depreciation... I think its to help out farmers and such.

I think you're right Ed, but for clarification I would slightly rephrase your definition to be "the weight of the vehicle when weighed while carrying the manufacturer's recommended maximum full payload including passengers."

Allow me to illustrate Here's a pic of my old LX470 which had a curb weight of approximately 5,500 lbs and a GVWR of approximately 6,500 lbs. The bridge in this pic had a sign saying maximum weight of 3 tons. Since I only weigh about 200 lbs myself and had maybe 50 lbs of cargo with me, I figured my total weight was approx 5,750 lbs thus making it safe for me to cross the bridge :nervous:

Now, if I were to have ONE of these young ladies stuffed in the back, the total weight would then have exceeded the maximum capacity of the bridge thus rendering it unsafe for me to travel across the bridge, even though the vehicle itself could have handled the load since the total weight would still be (barely) less than the vehicle's GVWR.

However, if I were to have BOTH of these ladies along for the ride, it would have exceeded my GVWR and my axles might have snapped

With Bush's tax plan.. It is an incentive to help out small business owners.. I think its to help out farmers and such.

I thought it was a gift to the type of people who vote for him.

One of the fellows that I work with, his wife is a CPA who works from her home office, she just bought a Tundra Limited that he drives and she will claim as her business vehicle. She will essentially be able to deduct the entire cost of the vehicle from her income in the first year.

4Runners don't qualify.

Too bad 4 Runners don't qualify for Bush's accelerated depreciation tax giveaway. Perhaps a Sequoia qualifies.

To be fair I think this accelerated depreciation tax break pre-dates Bush, all he did was sign into law the bill that quadrupled the amount from $25k to $100k
