HAHAHAHA My 4runner weighs 4411lbs

Matthew Starr said:
actually i think you over estimate "the powers of a 4th gen" my dads runner really isnt that fast. Now in torque, ya hes got me. I have hard time pulling the band equiment trailer and he...doesnt. I got the overhaul becuase im turning my 4runner into a race...suv not for maintenance. And hell, for all you know i just strapped a rocket to the back of it. Just wait, but still keep up the arguing. Im enjoying it way too much.

so you're saying that when you load up both 4runners with a equal amount of weight, his is faster. but when you remove said weight, yours somehow leaves his in the dust???

I did some clicking around and read that he blew a rod through the block trying to run 14psi with stock internals! :bigok: :bigok:

Another guy, TRDatVT, said he had been running 11.5PSI for months with no issues, and got 10 second trap times.

Yep, I have seen that 11 lbs of boost is about as high as you want to go to drive around. I just wanted to show all the nay sayers that people do successfully build these up into to....
dare I say it....

TRD S/C killers

i would bet you that that guy has over $20,000 in mods on that truck. I never said you could not make them fast, but it takes insane amounts of $$ to do it. i bet most of the guys on this forum do not make that much $$ in a year, so it just isnt attainable. You guys arent even taking into consideration, the modifications to the drivetrain, it would definitely have to have a new LSD in the rear, and axles, Im quite certain that even with a 5speed, it would need to be built to handle the extra power. Have you even thought about brakes? I dont think i would want to go stopping a 4runner from 140 with the stock disc, and drum brakes on these things. What about suspension? Next thing you know, you have $40,000 invested in a $7,000 vehicle.
I can take an rx7 and build a 500hp car for less than $12,000 including purchase price. Hell, if you really wanted a fast car on a budget, all you have to do is build an AWD eclipse.
Just be happy with the TRD supercharger, with the proper fuel mods, and a 12psi pulley, that should be around 320rwhp. That will probably get you into the 13s.

They are not fast in stock form, and even with exhaust and intake mods, you get minimal gains, the only way to make any HP is to go forced induction, or nitrous.

Ok sorry, ive been in buena vista all day so i havent been able to answer some questions and bullshit. Ok first of all my 4runner is not stock. I sold that 4.0 to a buddy of mine that works for toyota and as part of the deal he's getting me a supercharger for next to nothing. BUT i still got a lot of money for that 4.0 (+trans) and since i cant get the s/c till june i decided to blow all that money on other things to get my runner prepared for the s/c. Once i get everything installed and tuned, ill tell everyone "WHAT I HAVE CREATED". To give you guys a bit of a teaser i just had the heads rebuilt (excuse my lack of knowledge about engines) but i don't really understand what was done. I do know how ever that my engine is now a 3.8l and that i told my genius of a mechanic that i saw a 2" pulley on urd and gadget says you better have some head work done if you want to use that. So i went to my mechanic and said "do head work" and he did...and now its faster. I also purchased a number of things from urd that are going to and are making this thing scream.
Second... when you're looking up the weight of a 4runner look at it really close... YOU'RE READING IT IN KILOGRAMS!!! Lets do the conversion from KG to LBS together. The gross curb weight of a 4runner is 2,381KG now multiply that by 2.2... lets do this together 2,381 x 2.2 = 5238.2lbs ok and now that we've got that out of the way.
No im not stupid, no i dont think a stock 4runner is fast and for the idiot who said and i quote, "so you're saying that when you load up both 4runners with a equal amount of weight, his is faster. but when you remove said weight, yours somehow leaves his in the dust"... take a f*ckin physics class. That is what torque does and obviously the 1UZ-FE has more than me, plus the 4th gens weigh a heck of a lot more than the 3rd gens do. Think of like this; if you strap 10,000lbs to a Mclaren F1, then you strap 10,000lbs to a Ford F350 and you put them together in a drag race guess which ones gonna win. for all you idiots out there the f350 is gonna win. why because it has more torque. but then remove that weight and do the same drag race, well this should be a no-brainer.
and next for all you pessimistic a**holes who say i dont know what im talking about, I've been racing ATV's for some 15 years now, I own a Toyota Camry that i drive in the summer (so my runner isnt really my daily driver), i used to own a WRX (not sti) that i used to race all the time at bandimere and at my cousins private racing school/race track, and i used to own a 2000 Toyota Tacoma that i did a solid axle swap. I am the drummer of a pretty successful band and I love anything that has to do with cars and trucks (except Civics and Jeeps). So if i feel like doing something to my cars i just kinda do it. No reason, its just a hobbie i guess. and scott, i dropped about $10,000 into my tacoma and a year later sold it for $7,000, so to give you a straight answer i really dont care... and finally, I'm not here to impress you people or to get your acceptance, I'm here to get advice, give advice and maybe make a couple 4runner friends. Thats all and heres some pics of todays drive to Buena Vista.

Love,
Mr. Starr

well, I'm glad you finally got some pictures up! I've been waiting to see what she looked like in detail past that tiny sig picture. :D

I was thinking you might have bored out the block if you had major head work done...you said you sold a 4.0 engine? isn't that the 4th gen V6? where did you get that from?

edit: one last thing...

Curb weight "is the total weight of a vehicle with standard equipment, all necessary operating consumables (e.g. motor oil and coolant), a full tank of fuel, while not loaded with either passengers or cargo."

GVWR "is the maximum allowable total weight of a road vehicle or trailer when loaded - i.e including the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight."
Curb weight source

The difference between gross weight and curb weight is the total passenger and cargo weight capacity of the vehicle. For example, a pickup truck with a curb weight of 4500 pounds might have a cargo capacity of 2000 pounds, meaning it can have a gross weight of 6500 pounds when fully loaded.
GVWR Source

1998 SR5 automatic V6:
The curb weight = 3,850lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight = 5,250 lbs

This is a very weird thread.

rdg- That seems fairly fast for a 4runner. Was that with OD off or something?

Scott- Why did you have ECT on?

I'm not doubting you Matthew, but I know that our 2003 Suburban with the stock V8 would kill my 4runner. I'm really impressed by it's power, especially for a SUV.

ok i still have no clue where you guys are getting this from cause most sports cars weigh about that much, and when i went to the weigh station the little monitor screen thingy said 4411lbs and i have nothing in this that would weigh almost 1000lbs. anyways i got that 4.0 through a friend who imports engines and transmissions from japan. I got my 1GR-FE (4.0l V6) with 31k miles for $2200. Then Scott told me how much more amazing the 5VZ-FE (3.4l V6) is than the 1GR and then I started having second thoughts. Then when my mechanic and I started looking at what it was going to take and how much more money i would have to spend to do the swap i said no, this was a bad idea. Luckily i was able to sell the motor + trans to a good friend who works for toyota for $2000+a brand new trd s/c for only $200.

It's in the link that is underlined.

I went and checked my owners manual (the original was with the car when i bought it still!!!) and it had a specifications page. Did not list any weights, just dimensions and lubrication/oil/coolant types.

Hahaha. :lmao: Which one? the one with the drive through? There is one in the king soopers and one in the safeway. 3 starbucks in that little town is a little over kill. But no one is out past 6:00 in conifer lol. But that does seem really early. I worked at the qdoba there in conifer for 3 years and we always closed at 10:00.

Matt,
You should not spout off at the mouth when you have no clue what you are talking about. there is no way in hell you can increase displacement with doing anything to the heads. THE ONLY WAY TO INCREASE DISPLACEMENT IS TO BORE THE CYLINDERS OUT, OR STROKE THE MOTOR.
For those of you who dont know, a stroker motor is using a different crank that makes the piston have more downward travel, which increases the displacement of the cylinder. Which would most definitely require the use of a custom oilpan.
Most people who have headwork done, have the air passages ported and polished. the result of this is being able to flow more air into the cylinders, BUT without aftermarket cams, or forced induction, you arent going to see a benefit.
An aftermarket intake cam is going to increase the time the intake valve stays open, which results in more air being injested into the engine. Of course with more air being injested into the motor, you have to have an aftermarket exhaust cam to increase the time the exhaust valves stay open to expell the gasses. this results in low vacuum. That is why you get a pretty nasty uneven idle. Its like when you see a tricked out muscle car with an idle that shakes the whole car.
in order to make all of this work properly, and actually make power, the timing has to be modified, which in turn will require some type of aftermarket ECU.
Im pretty sure a set of aftermarket cams are going to cost atleast $1500, if not more. You can also have companies do a custom grind for whatever duration you want.

So, matt, the way it stands, you are probably making an additional 15hp with ALL of the mods you have performed so far. If you really want to prove something, put it on the dyno, and post up a sheet.

Oh, BTW, im sure the video you posted was with all of your bumpers, spare tire, hitch, interior, hood, and whatever else you could take off the thing to make it lighter.
My truck is stock as a clock all the way down to the jack. not to mention a box that houses 2 12" subs. Add me to the mix(im 230), and id say you probably have me by at least 500lbs. one other thing you did not take into consideration is the size of my tires. Im running 285/75/16 tires, that is going to also play a factor. Just wondering, will your truck spin the tires? even power braking?

to the other guy, yeah im sayin that most of the guys on here are probably younger than 23, still in college, or still living with mommy and daddy. So i can almost guarantee they make less than $20k a year working at best buy, or a coffee shop part time.
I have seen multiple posts on here about "I cant get larger tires on my runner because my dad wont let me get a lift" If you dont fall in that category, i apologize.
