So glad I stumbled upon this thread today. I am going to a gun show on Saturday for my first gun purchase and to take a CCW course. I have been researhcing for some time now and just can't decide G19, 23, 26 or 27.
For home defense, larger is better than smaller. The 26/27 have a very small grip that will leave your pinky dangling. The 19/23 have a full grip and a slightly longer sight radius. Both of those things -- grip and sight radius -- make the 19/23 significantly easier to shoot quickly and accurately. The 19/23 conceal easily in a CrossBreed IWB holster. I strongly suggest that you get the 19 or 23.
At one time, 9mm defensive ammo was not that good. But with good 9mm JHP (for example, Federal HST), there isn't that much difference in performance between 9mm and .40. The 9mm will have noticeably less report and less recoil. It will also be cheaper.
If I could easily get a Glock 19 in MA (our laws suck, don't ask), I would sell my Glock 23 and get a 19 instead.
If you carry concealed and find yourself wanting something smaller than the Glock 19/23, then I suggest you add a pocket gun to your Glock 19/23, like a Kahr PM9, S&W Shield, S&W 642, etc. The Glock 26/27 are just too thick to work for me as a pocket gun.
