Happy Memorial Day

I don't post very often but I wanted to send a shout out to all of the T4R community that are in the armed services and say Thank You.

Without you I wouldn't be free. Wouldn't be able to sit here today in peace and be able to reflect on how great that we all have it here in the States.

We love you guys and gals.

I think what affected me the most today is the lack of flags flying in my neighborhood on arguably the most important day of the year in America.

Yes I know July 4th is our Independence Day but without our armed services this country would not exist.

I live in an upper class neighborhood where people have been blessed by the American dream and you would think there would be more of a display in support of our Veterans.

And then I drive around about 8 miles away where the houses cost a quarter to a third of what they do here and damn near every house has a flag out.

My full support is and always has been about the vet's. This day is yours. You have earned it and my respect.

Not sure about your situation, but some upscale neighborhoods have Home Owners Associations(HOAs) that do not allow a homeowner to display the American Flag out in front of their property.

Unbelievable.

It is truly sad. HOA's needs to revisit this policy. If any American citizens have an issue with it, let them move elsewhere.

The high school band comes to neighborhoods in our school district and sells a service where they will place the flag in a holder installed in the ground (by them) curbside for a nominal amount. Its a flag on an 8' pole and is absolutely beautiful to see a street lined with them. Our last neighborhood with houses thst cost 50% as much, had a flag at 80% of the homes. Sadly, in the gated community where we live now people can more than afford it, but I only saw about 6 homes on our street of ~25 houses that had flags out today, whether it be their own or through supporting the band. I've sponsored a flag every year since they started this program, and donate enough to sponsor a few extra flags, asking that they please see if other homeowners that don't have one would allow it to be placed in their yard free of charge.

Actually George W Bush signed the "Freedom to Display the American Flag Act" in 2005. If your HOA or City won't let you fly the American Flag they are breaking the law.

God Bless America and God Bless our Soldiers..those who are fighting for us currently, who have fought for us in the past and those that gave their lives for us.
 
Memorial Day

I took Memorial day for myself today, repalced an exterior door. Too much like work.

Tuesday my son and I are going to the local Veterains Hospital to volunteer for 6 hours. We usually go every Monday, but they are mostly closed on Holidays.

You guys know that Veterans Day is to acknowledge our military personnel.

Memorial Day is to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

I think the retail people try to make it into another "celebrate and spend" holiday.

What's so "happy" about Memorial Day? This is the day we honor the fallen soldiers who fought for our country. Nothing happy about it, rather a day of remembrance. Honor the living soldiers at anytime but theirs is Veterans Day.

It's amazing that a select group of people on a forum can smash my post with the word "happy". Someone can't even give thanks without people being dicks....It was meant as a true thanks.

Welcome to the internet...I do feel ya. As vet I try not to judge people on Memorial Day who try to show respect. Personally I think people are often confused between Memorial and Veterans Day as to what to do so they just try their best and pay respect to all Military Members currently serving, past, and still on watch. I have never taken offense to some one trying to the something nice.

not sure if you are referring to my post.... BUT I was just saying it is a bad day. Lost a lot of friends (Brothers) over the year... I hate how retail and media have appended HAPPY to Memorial Day.... but anyway not taking anything from your post, the fact that you are willing to thank a Vet and not bash them is good enough for me.
