has anyone noticed this

I have a 2011 TE with around 500 miles and think I'm feeling it as well. Now I'm going to pay closer attention to it...and if it is present, it will probably drive me insane. Keeping my fingers crossed for all parties involved.

12 or 13k miles, but I've noticed it since the first oil change/rotation around 5k. Took it into the dealer for the 10k oil change and they say everything is fine.

Thanks, I was just curious mine also became very consistent between 10 and 15 K miles. So far the new trans only has 5k miles on it and I haven't really noticed the problem nearly as bad as it was originally.

Can you see if the dealer will give you a reference number or a case, just so I have something for my dealer to look at?

This really sounds like a programming issue with the ECU/TCU. Ford had the same exact problem with the 6 speed trans. in the V8 Explorer/Sport Trac a few years back. My 2007 Sport Trac began doing it at 6000 miles (again, same exact problem). Ford put out a TSB which involved an ECU/TCU reflash, which cured the problem in most cases. Different manufacturer, same problem, coincidence? Electronically controlled transmissions are tough to program right the first time. Real world driving often brings out problems that are missed during R+D. It may be something different in Toyota's case, but I'm willing to bet the solution ends up being a programming reflash.

I'll try to get a case number, but my dealer has not been very forthcoming on that information, I have asked for it before.

I hope they can come up with a better reprogram than the one they tried first on mine. It didn't do anything to the problem.

My dealer looked through all TSBs and service notes for 2011's today - none for the transmission. Hopefully we're ok.

I have a 2011 4Runner I purchased in Jan 2011. At around 7K miles, I started noticing three distinct "shutters" or "stutters" when the tranny shifted from 1st to 2nd after the vehicle warmed up. It is most noticeable at slower speeds and going up hill from a complete stop. Don't feel it if I give a lot of gas on take-off. There are other threads on this issue on this website that I am looking at to to help my case with Toyota. Took it the dealer today (11K miles) and the tech felt the problem immediately. A case was filed with Toyota by the dealer and apparently Toyota is aware of the issue but does not have a fix nor do they know what the issue is at this time. Service manager said he will speak to district rep in 2 days when he is in town. Curious to find out what they say. Did you ever get yours fixed?

Seems to be hit or miss as mine doesn't have it or any other problems for that matter at 35k miles.Torque converter in the transmission would be my hypothesis..... Here's a good read on it from the FJ forum in one of many threads on it............. Shuddering transmission problems =( - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

Spoke to the Customer Relations Manager at my local dealership today and she spoke to her district rep. District Representative states Toyota is aware of the issue, which she referred to as "the 1-2 transmission stutter" and as "a characteristic for the 2011 transmission". She stated, "there is no fix at this time" and "Toyota is looking into software changes for the transmission". The customer relations manager was pretty stunned that Toyota could not find a fix and told me my best option at this time was to go through arbitration. Frustrated as this is my third Toyota 4WD and my first new car ever. Bought a new car as I was tired of having used cars with mechanical issues. If they can't fix it, I'm not sure what to get next. Don't want a 2012 4Runner if it has the same tranny and engine. Will wait and see what the District Service Rep has to say tomorrow.

Thanks for the link Harper.
In that FJ thread some of the posters mentioned "the clunk" or "the bump" in the drivetrain when they let off the brakes after a hard stop. One guy says a Toyota mechanic told him it is a precusor to the torque convertor problem and another said it's just the lack of lube in the u-joints, etc.
I've started to get this several weeks ago. Guess it's time to buy a grease gun again and find out. I sold my last one 20 years ago when I became a Honda guy.

I've always wondered about the clunk, I've had it since the truck was new and still have that after the new transmission. I always thought that was just something normal for a Toyota. This is my first Toyota ever.

+1 for the 'thunk' too

Mine started doing this recently. My 3rd gen also did this quite a bit. Seems to only happen if you stop quickly. Like the transmission doesn't complete its shift until you start moving again, or something....

I've been following this forum for about a month now and am impressed with how helpful everyone is. I've never owner a 4runner but the 5th generation has really got my attention.

I recently test drove two 2011 TE's and both had the same issues with the transmission as well. I test drove a third TE and didn't notice it. Also, the first 2 had a shake in the steering wheel around 50-60 mph. The third did not have it. I love the vehicle and am ready to buy but these issues are making me hesitant.

Are there member of this forum that have not had either of these issues with there TE's and have higher mileage?

at 10K miles on my '11 TE, i get a very slight shudder at really low speeds from 1-2, but no issues with shake.

My 4Runner has always "shuddered" briefly shifting between 1st and 2nd gear - when turning - but only at really low speeds. With any acceleration at all there is no shudder and I am at 19K or so and no problems nor do I expect any. All major components of this vehicle are robust in their design and under my normal operating conditions do not expect any failures.

There is hope!

My 2011 just turned 20k and i had an oil change and 'recommended' re-torque of driveshaft bolts also lube propeller shaft and lube driveshaft. The driveshaft clunk is gone, always felt like i had a tiger by the tail when stopped which forced me to always shift into neutral, this issue is also fixed. The extra $60 for to fix these 2 issues was well worth it, shame on toyota for charging for it though! What i've tried to fix the 1-2 stutter as recommended by a poster here(sorry can't recall who) is just wait 2 seconds after taking my foot off the break before accellerating-issue fixed and i'm starting to love this truck again.

Got mine in for 5k checkup and drove with the tech to show the shudder issue. When I returned to pick it up they explained that they worked with Toyota and were asked to provide them data on the car while driving warm and cold. Apparently all values were considered normal (as I understand it). Toyota did acknowledge that other 11 4runners have experienced this issue and they are currently in an "investigative/research" phase. No other direction at this time. Toyota Case number TA111880276. I wish there was more information but I am glad I got as far as I did on my first visit and that Toyota acknowledges there could be a problem. Hopefully they will have a solution soon. They also said that at this time they dont have any indication or concern that this will cause further damage......for what its worth.

They also asked if I noticed more when it was warm vs cold and I honestly never paid attention. Anyone else notice whether it was a warm cold issue? I have 5k miles so far... anyone notice this getting worse as time passes?

I asked a dealership sale rep for this "Toyota Case number TA111880276. ". this is his reply: I looked in to the issue for you about the transmission shudder! The Toyota factory is aware of the issue and has already fixed the issue for all late model 2011’s and incoming 2012’s. If you look at the forum all the posts are from earlier in the year. So you are safe to go with a new 2011 runner or a 2012.

no sure if he is telling the truth. I sent online question to Toyota Canada. I'll post it here when i get a feedback.
