i've seen something like that. But, i think it was from CBI OffRoad Fab

edit: i remember him posting pics of it on this forum.
 
Someone over on the "other" forum is designing a bolt-on rear tire carrier option for our 5th Gen's. He should have something within the next 2-3 months.

I was going to wait until it was finished to post a thread on it; however, its my 4Runner he's using to build the prototype. He is a really really awesome guy, with tons of skill and he's a perfectionist with a 4Runner like me. To top it all off he's in the military and I couldn't be happier to support him. I'll keep you all posted as the project progresses.

Incorrect, whole different product. What CBI designed is specifically for the 5th gen and goes behind the actual bumper, the link posted is a universal mount that can be used on any vehicle.

Correct... Maybe I should have specified this.. This is an extremely easy removable piece that could be added for a long haul, going to the trails (although approach angles change), going to the mtns., etc.

I will agree it doesn't look as good as a bumper (i.e. link posted above, BFLAN's bumper or the Offroad Evolution bumper), but it is a easy solution to turn a daily driver into a trail ready truck in minutes (and save weight on daily driving).

It seems like a pretty good idea, but haven't seen anyone with one.

So, just trying to see what everyone's thoughts are?

Saw one of these on a Lexus I was following yesterday, maybe not exactly the same.

Initially I though I'd like it, but once I saw it in person... not so much... It just sticks out way too far. The one I saw even had the tire tilted in.

IMHO I would use the $$ for a custom bumper, or have something fabbed that bolts on. If EVO ever releases the bumper they put on the Project Backcountry 4R I'd be in for something like that....

I know everyone can check the link to see what the finished product will look like - but still exciting to share some pics as the project progresses.

The brackets that mount to the frame are almost finished...luckily the holes in the 4th gen are the same ones on the 5th gen so they went on pretty painlessly.

Mike, tire carrier is coming along nicely...can't wait to see the finished product in person. On an unrelated note, thanks again for helping me install the sliders last week!
