Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, didn't see it in browsing the first 10 pages on the board - Bought new limited in May - nav system is nearly useless, not very "smart" at all with regards to choosing the easiest, fastest route. How often does Toyota provide updates? Any options out there to improve performance?

You best bet is to replace it. I was pretty disappointed with it and eventually got so frustrated I installed a Pioneer Z120BT. You can find all the information here:

Nav, audio, interface is all better, everything the stock one should have been.

i agree with Ryan. it's not exactly best-in-class, but it's good for a stock unit and, hey, you save yourself a DIY install hassle. if you read the manual it will perform quite nicely... despite its quirks.
I'm with Ryan and sandcrawler on this. After I got used to it, I think it does the job. I tell it where I want to go and it tells me how to get there.
Give it a chance by reading the manual and making sure you know its capabilities before you go to the trouble and expense of an aftermarket nav system.

Mine is working fine. The Acura I previously owned had a better system, usability wise, but it did no better job with directions. All in all, I would give the nav an A-.

I've been extremely impressed with the NAV system in my 4runner. I was initially "double checking" it's route against my iphone GPS app. In nearly EVERY scenario, it guided me the same route the iphone was taking me. It's very user-friendly, fairly simple to configure, and you don't have to worry about theft since it's integrated into the vehicle. All in all, I'm very happy with it. I've not gotten lost yet! (knock on wood!)

The most important part of any NAV system is understanding the variables. I couldn't figure out why mine was taking me the long way to a point without taking the toll road. Well, I didn't have "take toll roads" enabled, that's why.
Also, when you put in a destination, the system will have different routes based on either estimated time or estimated distance. The variables for those two choices it doesn't know, traffic, construction, accidents etc.
This NAV system gives the same output as others. They all use the same calculations and have the same base information, the difference is in the interface.
I have gripes, but overall, I like it.

My guess is he's referring to the override switch that allows you to input addresses etc. while driving. There's a thread somewhere on here but I'm not able to find it right now.
