I bought a $41k car (with all options) and walked out with it for $38k because of three things:
1) Did alot of research online, including using my bank online to give me their estimates on what I should pay. Printed all the info out because the bank also sends it directly to the dealerships near me so they know that they can't overcharge
2) Brought my pre-approval loan letter indicating I was serious in buying and had the check ready, and
3) I was ready to walk out if I didn't get a good deal and move to the next Toyota dealership. I actually had the other Toyota dealership on the phone telling them what I was being offered and if they can beat it. This became the main reason why I was offered that price in the end.
You HAVE to be ready to walk out and play the game: put the dealerships against each other. It's a business and they all know it. When I walked out with the keys, the manager said, "You really worked us out." I was also there for 4 hours because they wouldn't let me walk out.
Good luck and keep us posted.
