*HELP* I need to get this done tonight - Center Console Swap

So my 1998 4Runner Limited is torn apart right now. I'm attempting to swap a center console that has cupholders into it.

The guy I bought it from said it was from a 99, but I do not know if I believe that anymore.. Timmy The Toolman (on youtube) has a video on a swap of a 99 center console/brake with his 98 limited (same situation i'm in). And his holes lined straight up. :redbrick:

I purchased the center console, the "tub", and the e-brake from him.

There's 2 parts that are not fitting. The "tub" and the e-brake.

Thoughts on how to get this to work?

Would you advise to drill holes in the "tub" to get it to line up? Or drill new holes into the body & cut away part of the body to get the tub to fit?

Note - the tub and the e-brake do not line up correctly either.. I'm lost.

I need to get this thing back together soon! I've already re-routed the security, window, and ect power button as well.

Here is if I get the top left and bottom right bolt holes to line up.. it make it crooked.

I don’t know about the tub lining up. I did mine years ago but I don’t remember having to do anything to it.

As for the handle, crooked to the pass side is correct. Look at where it sits in the new console. It’s on the pass side. It should line up.

Edit: I pulled the console up for a look. It looks like I may have beavered out the holes in the tub to match the body. I for sure did not put new holes in the body. Here’s a pic for what it’s worth.

I would imagine offset to the right towards passenger would make sense, but on that last photo, do you see how it's more-so "pointed" to the right? I'll go out and take a look at the 99+ console and see if it looks like it would line up.


Under further inspection, I am beginning to think the 'feet' on the new -e-brake are not level, causing it to not line up correctly.

Hey thanks for pulling that off to check.

Take a look, I slipped the console on over to check the fit. Can you confirm this is correct? I tried to get the camera angle as straight as possible to show the brake pointing off to the right.

2nd question - Would it be possible to just leave by 1998 tub in? I did notice the 99+ tub's hole for the brake line does actually come in at an angle (pointing right) which would line up 'more' correctly than the 1998 tub hole.


At this point, i'm thinking of like you said, 'beavering' out the 99+ tub to line the holes up correctly with the pre-drilled holes in the body.

Did you use a 99+ e-brake AND tub? And what year is your runner? Limited trim?

The final question - regarding the tub, I watched a tutorial (LINK ->1998 Toyota 4Runner Cup Holder Mod - YouTube) if you watch at 5:25, he does not change the "tub", he left in the 1998 tub. Would you see this causing any issues?

If not, I may just leave it as is. Thoughts?

Only thing I can think is that the new tub lines the cable up with the handle a bit. I honestly can’t remember what I did but I do remember it was late at night after work. I may possibly have left the original in also. Sorry can’t confirm, too long ago.

Also, if you truck was built prior to 4/98 you will either have to notch the holes on the Ebrake cup, OR take a dremel to the opening in the floor for the ebrake cup.

Also, The 96-98 ebrake cup is straight, the 99+ is angled to account for the angled ebrake handle. You can use the 96-98 ebrake cup but it will bind the cable slightly. Not a super huge deal, but I always provide the cup so it doesn't bind.

Ok great! Thanks for also confirming.
I think what i'm going to do is get the 99+ cup and drill out/extend the pre-drilled holes to line up with the threads in the body.

I will update soon to let you know how it goes.

You already have the 99+ cup, which I gave you. Or did you mean you're just going to notch out the one I gave you?

i was talking with a guy the other day, which is how I learned about the 4/98 split. He and his friend both have 98's and bought consoles from me, the 99+ cup dropped into his buddies but not his. His production date was 3/98 and his buddy was 5/98. Also explains why Timmy didn't have an issue with his either. Why Toyota would have change the floor I can't really say. Its super weird.

I have a 96 and purchased the set from [MENTION=78895]DeathCougar[/MENTION]. I ended up using a dremel in the opening to make the tub line up. No biggie. Sean does explain in the video you may need to make slight modifications to make fit. Glad you were able to figure it out.

I notched the one you gave me. I used a small bit to start new holes roughly 1/8" towards the passenger side, then drilled it out with a bigger bit. After that, everything fit into place correctly and it was only a matter of minutes to put it back together and button everything up.

That is very strange on the different month/different floor dimensions i'd say. But awesome you figured it out.
