Help identifying this 1996 stock radio..

In looking through the Owner's Manual for my recently purchased 1996 4Runner, I noticed that my stereo system doesn't match any of the diagrams in the book. Can anyone tell me about this radio and what it is? It seems to be stock, but I don't know what type. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound.

Also, the LCD screen in the lower right doesn't seem to have a back light. This is most annoying when trying to adjust the radio at night. Does anyone know if that is normal or if there is anything I can do to correct it?

This is the 'premium' version of Toyota's audio systems. I had this same exact one in my 1999 Tacoma. Yes the lower right clock LCD should have a backlight- maybe yours is burnt out? I agree with you completely on the sound- I was pleasantly surprised with the sound in my old Tacoma!

I had that exact system in my old 1996 SR5. That thing thumped pretty hard for a stock system - I think it sounded better than my premium system in my 2002.

Thanks for the input, guys! Now I just need to figure out how to replace that bulb so I can see what radio station I'm tuning it at night..

Any ideas how to go about that?

90% chance that the lamps are soldered in place. You will need a de-soldering tool to remove the old lamp and old solder

You may get lucky, Fujitsu Ten which is probably who manufactured the stereo at one time used lamps that you push in and twist to lock in place kind of like the lamps you find in switches and instrument clusters

So to get in there and find out, you're basically saying I need to remove the head unit and open it up. (i.e., remove the center console and portions of the dash, etc?)

Yes

Or you could buy a cheap replacement on Ebay. I used to see a lot of those same units for sale used on Ebay
