HELP! Need Wiring Diagram for Flasher Module- Turn Signal Relay

I will set it up once we know that we have a product to buy.

I don't think I should set one up BEFORE Scott know that he can make a product.
scottmcphee PM me your email contact. Maybe I can get a pre-order list going for you.

I am almost the official GB person now (with Gobi, RCI, Shrockworks, Rigid, Tepui etc...).... LOL.....

I will wait for the go ahead from scottmcphee first.

Also, scottmcphee where are you located in Canada? Maybe we can have a member get to you to show you their truck physically!!

Sorry I have been absent here a bit.. But now its a weekend and i have more time to into projects like this. I am in Alberta there are tons of these trucks around here to look at.

Here's the issue... I don't have blank stock cases and sockets for these bigger Toyota flashers so I can't make tons of them. A group buy i really a stretch idea right now. First things first... Getting one functional.

Then suppose it works well enough... The trick is getting ahold of some of these flashers that I can gut and stuff TapTurn components into.

A good source would be used parts and pulls from junkers. I woukd hate to buy new just to gut them... Costs go up. I would probably start by making a core exchange offer... Send in an old flasher with some money and you'd get one back with TapTurn inside.

Whereabouts in AB are you located scottmcphee ? I'm in Drayton Valley - if you're close, I could give you my flasher to convert once you're ready - my 4R isn't the daily driver, so a couple days of downtime is cool with me.

So there's a few variants of flashers for the generations of 4runners.

I've evaluated the effects would be by dropping in the existing TapTurn design into these different flasher packages.

1. For the 12 pin flasher that uses front signals as DRL: By deleting the DRL function and hardwiring the front signal to always blink in unison with the rear signal on the same side, TapTurn would be a drop-in replacement that would deliver all TapTurn functions. Or, with a slight modification of the TapTurn design, I think it could retain DRL function, but may end up with wonky blinks (front and back would be out of phase by 1/2 cycle).... sort of a wig-wagging between front and back when viewing the truck from the side.

2. For the 18 pin flasher (schematics in this thread), which uses front signal bulbs as DRL, and has trailer towing light function: I could either delete the DRL or retain it with a slight design change, as above, but would have to delete the towing lights. Adding towing lights from the flasher would be a big redesign for TapTurn. (But you could add a common 5-wire trailer light adapter at the rear of the truck, wired into tail lights, like lots of vehicles do to compensate for the loss.)

3. For the 18 pin flasher for the latest T4R generation (that I have in my hand), which uses hi-beam half bright as DRL, and has no towing brake lights function: Without a redesign of TapTurn I'd have to lose the DRL function. (You could drive with low beams switched on to compensate). But other than that all TapTurn function would work.

It boils down to things like how important is DRL to you? Could you stand using your low beams instead if DRL was deleted? DO you have a towing package and depend on that socket back there... or meh, never tow?

What I think I'll do is start by taking the flasher I've got, delete the DRL function and drop in a stock TapTurn inside.

Scott!
You are awesome!
I assume the flasher you are referring to is the one I sent you.
Option 3 works for me PERFECTLY! I want TapTurn and could care LESS about DRL function, as long as low, high beams, and turn signal work, and I do not lose the ability to have working blinkers and brake lights on my trailer, I am in!

This is awesome news!!!

scottmcphee , for me, I like the DRL, but I am already installing the "LED Fog/DRL 2in1" to replacement fog light as fog and DRL, so, you taking out the factory DRL would not be an issue for me. So if you can make an option 3, I will buy.

Someone linked me to the 2014+ diagrams for the headlights system. THANK YOU!

I see now I made a mistake in my thinking with item 3 in the list above.

The 2014+ flasher DOES have trailer signal and brake lights in it, and the DRL is controlled by a separate module. This makes it very similar if not the same for 2010+ flasher.. So the same story goes.

It is the trailer stuff that causes me a headache for existing TapTurn design.

I have to give up that trailer function if we cram existing TapTurn. The DRL on hi-beams is controlled by another module, so that should be unaffected by TapTurn.

This is the opposite of what you're willing to give up, itsdchz

So I have a 2013 SR5. I am in and never use the drl. I don't know how many pins I have. Also, will it have the strobe and whatnot features as well?

The trailer function is important to me and I use the 7 prong towing connector to control brakes and lights on my trailer.

Key question about the 7 pin plug and your trailer.

Does your trailer have one bulb per side that is used for both signaling and brakes? Or do you have separate bulbs?

It looks like the job of the flasher is to send signal blinks to the trailer, unless the brake pedal is pushed. Then it over-rides the signaling function and does something other than blinking...but just for the trailer lights.

I'm going to assume you have a shared bulb setup on the trailer. Tell me this, with your trailer connected...

Run the truck, signal left or right. Observe trailer lights, then have someone press brakes (while signaling). What happens to the light bulb that was blinking on the trailer in the direction being signaled? Does it continue to blink and the other side of the trailer comes on solid?

Stop signaling, now turn on hazards, observe trailer lights. Then have someone press brake pedal (while hazards on), what happens to the lights that were blinking on the trailer?
Do they both continue to blink, or do they both come on solid?

... if I were to add more logic to TapTurn to handle trailer lights, I need to know what it should do!

Thanks

strobe: yes, strobepack would be an option at purchase time

whatnot features: yes, those that come with any TapTurn, should all work on trucks too, based on what I'm seeing.

Wait for my group buy...... :bounce:

Of course I'll wait, just showing support.

I'm also waiting for whatever GB you come up with next so you can help me justify something else I didn't know I needed. [emoji6]

In all seriousness, this looks like a great product that I'm excited to own.

Can someone hook up to trailer lights and answer those questions please? Obviously you don't need to hitch up and tow, just get near enough to plug electricals together.

'Hanks

I'm in the middle of rewiring my trailer but I took some measurements with a multimeter. The indicator signal has priority over the brake signal. I had the hazards on and was seeing intermittent 12v pulses at the 7 pin connector. Having someone hold the brake pedal down did not change that. Brakes on alone showed continuous 12v. This makes sense because otherwise you would be sitting at a stoplight and no one would see your turn signal flashing on the trailer.
