Help!!! Rear hatch won't open.

My rear hatch will make the sound like it's trying to open when u hit the release but u can't get it open. It will then make the noise like it's closing its self after about 5sec. I use too do this about three times and then it would open but now I can't get it open for nothing. I've done a search but came up with nothing. I don't have money to take it to the dealership so I was hoping I could get some help to fix it my self. Thanks

Auto open and closing hatch I assume? Not just the lock down feature?

Mine is doing the same thing as of Monday. Wife went to the grocery... worked fine.. got home....would not open. Can hear the motor going but it remains locked. Looks like I will be pulling tha back panel off and trying find a fix. 1 screw and a dozen or so clips. Not sure how I am going to get it open to remove/replace the motor??

Ya I dont have the auto open and close. I think it the release and lock down motor I'm hearing. Thanks

i have the exact problem now too...i can here the motor trying to work, nothing happens. i took the back panel off, removed the motor assembly, cleaned it up, nothing. Is there nothing that can be done to rectify it without having to buy a new one?

So I still have to fix mine but for now I'm living with it. I will have to replace the it to fix it. If u push on the bottom of the door in the center with one hand and open the door with the other u can get it open no problem.

Replaced mine about a month ago. Took about 15 mins for the removal / install. Getting the computer to recognize the new part was the hardest part of the whole thing. Its a very easy fix. Motor is a little pricey though.

All you need to do for this, is remove the 2 blue plugs from the ECU in the back hatch for 15-20 seconds, plug them back in and it will work

Liftgate will not open

2003 Limited v6,

The liftgate will not open. This started happening after the battery died,replaced battery. When I unlock with either the drivers door lock or the remote or the key in the liftgate sounds as if it unlocked. I pull on the door opener and sound comes from the gate but I pull and pull but will not budge. I removed the panel inside the gate and exposed the ECU and motor unit and exposed the closer lever and opener lever and tried both levers to manually open the gate but all has failed. I have also checked connections on the Back dor ecu.Any suggestions would help

For time being, push on the door right above the button while pushing the button. It will release and the door will open. Motor/solenoid is week.

08 4 runner tailgate hatch

My tailgate would not latch - could hear the motor going through the motions, but wouldn't latch. An on going problem. After removing the assembly and cleaning it, re installed, door closed, but then could not open it - seems it was not recognized with using the handle. Installed a new latch assembly with motor. Closed latch, same thing. Seems it is electronic - where the handle and the release are not recognizing each other. Is there something that needs to be done so as the computer unit that is in the latch will recognize this new part. All fuses have been checked and the rear window does go down and up.

I replaced mine as well recently and had that problem. Tried unplugging the ECU in the back and it didnt work. Ended up disconnecting the battery, letting it sit for 5 minutes, and then it started working again.

I fixed mine. All I did was lube it up a bit. Turned out it was dirty and dry. Works like new.

I called my dealership and that is what the technician suggested I do. Disconnected the battery for about 15 secs. Had to trip the door locks a couple of times, but the hatch did work. BUT now my rear defroster and windshield wiper won't work. I'm wondering if I may have blown a fuse when I reconnected the battery only because when I started my car back up after connecting the battery - it stalled (never has done that).

If the rear window is down even a tiny bit, or the switch thinks it is - rear defrost and wiper stay off

My 2004 is doing it ... sure does tick me off. It will not open. Am I going to have to crawl through the back to get to it? No way, no emergency override or anything, to get the hatch open?

2001 sequoia that we have did that but it should be a simple fix. if you can get it open try to clean it and see it that works
