Backup camera
Dealer wants $460+ for the Toyota oem backup camera.
We have been experimenting with others. Savv makes one that closely resembles the factory OEM unit. I got one of those cheap ebay specials coming to test with as well. Apparently anything that outputs NTSC signal would work. This also creates another interesting scenario. If you can't use the 6pin blue plug to input external video, you can use pin1 and 3 on the 4pin white plug next to it which works with NTSC backup camera. Only thing you have to do is figure out how to trick the nav into thinking you are in reverse gear.

It is easy to fool the nav into thinking you are in reverse. It seems to cause other problems though.

I'm thinking that the "check surroundings for safety" text on the screen from the Siennaclub image is because the guy is right behind the camera and up against the bumper--maybe the camera and the "brains of the unit" can detect that there is an object right up against the back of the vehicle?

If your going to purchase the correct enitre center console peice for the nav unit, You will need the one with the smaller opening. Some sport, and SR5 models come wth this console. I believe the price for the peice is like $400 or somehting insane like that. Thats why I made my own face plate for $5! The Limited center dash peice is what I have, my 4runner is a limited. I believe there is also another post by jomama in this very thread that might metion the part number for it.

That "check surroundings for safety" text is in the Solara/Camery nav, and also on the Lexus RX330. It's always there regardless if you have video or not. I was getting it just by shorting the camera input (so nav knows something is connected), and shift into reverse gear.
We got the RES DVD video to play in the nav through the ECU. However the video would shift back to nav map as soon as the car starts moving. So grounding the parking brake alone does not do the trick. Need to add a timer to periodically disengage vss to fool the nav into thinking vehicle is stationary.

I am having more troubles with my install than I had hoped. I finally got the GPS signal straight. There must be something in my dash that the GPS antenna doesn't like because when I mount it above my rearview mirror, I received GPS signal 99% of the time as compared to 9% of the time.
The hopefully last challenge has been the am/fm reception. I thought I saw a post earlier that for a 2004 4runner without JBL, this wouldn't be an issue. On mine, it is an issue. I tried both Pete's approach in his instructions and OEM revised approach. (tap and connect grey and black wires from 10=pin plug that was originally in the factory head that is now attached to the jumper harness)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Original windshield. I'm not sure why I had such an improvement in GPS signal from under dash to just above rear view mirror.
As for the antenna amp, I'm getting frustrated. It sounded like the reverse and speed wires were the more challenging items but those didn't seem to give me any troubles. On the other hand, neither of the 2 antenna options posted have worked for me.
Is there another way to try and get power to the antenna amp?

It's likely an ISP or server issue... the domain registration doesn't expire until August according to the "whois" I just ran... I'm guessing Troy is just changing web hosting providers, since a place holder for globat.com shows up.. and whois shows a different hosting company on record. (ie; it hasn't gone thru yet)
