HID beginner help

I thought my replies were pretty cut and dry. I answered every question that he asked in his original post. He wanted to know if he could put HIDs in his stock housing, "Yes, you have a 2006+ projector you're fine". He wanted to know whats the whitest temperature, "5000k". Most factory set ups use 4300k but it is a fact that 4300k has slight shades of yellow. I also stated that 6000k is not blue, even showed pictures to the flamers and haters. Read what he wrote "I'd rather have a tint of blue than have yellow". Thats why I said "5000k is white, 6000k is small tint of blue".

What part of my posts were inaccurate? That I dont give a F#*k if you like my HIDs in reflector housings? Its your car put whatever type of bulb in it you want. Put one blue and one yellow in each headlight for all I care. I just answered the man's questions and I answered them accurately.

This is not a rage flame post about reflectors vs projectors. Nobody ever said reflectors were better, we all know they are not. I only stated that IMO its not as bright as everybody makes it out to be.

OMG, this is glare galore at its finest. I assume photo taken from eye level :D
I suggest you do comparison side by side with your Bimmer just to see how actually bad it is.

A picture taken with a camera phone.....Sorry I didnt break out the professional grade Nikon for the flamers.

For the 12th time. The topic at hand is:

A) Can he put HIDs in his 2006 - YES

B) What is the whitest color (without yellow) - 5000k

Anything other than those 2 is completely off topic.....

Naked eye shows no glare at all btw. The ONLY reason I posted pics is to show that 6000k is not blue. Is this the T4R Special ED forum??

Edit: 2 weeks now at 90% night driving. Still no flashes (except T4R flamers)

Paraordnance - I suggest you "compare THESE NUTS"

As stated previously, about 4300K is pure white. Above 4300K you begin to lose useable light; approx. 16% loss from 4000K to 5000K. At 5000K, those with anything but the best of vision will notice problems seeing in the dark when it's raining, foggy, etc.. Useable light continues to drops off as you continue into the cooler colors.

5000K at 35W shouldn't get you flashed or looked at by LEO's.

I just finished the HID on my truck truck for head light and fog light and I went with a 6000k kit. It is absolutely true that you will have some difficulty seeing in the rain at night. The only good thing about HID in the rain at night is anything that has a reflective material can be seen from much further away than with a Halogen bulb. Good luck!

Keep it up Sonic, all you are doing is making yourself look worse. PARAORDNANCE isn't flaming you AND If you do a SEARCH, you will see that he is very knowledgeable on the subject of HID lights, which by default makes what he has to say in this thread relevant.

Hey,

I just bought a 2006 T4R, and I want to put in HID's. I've tried to do searches and read up as much as I can, but I'm still unclear on a few things, so figured I'd ask.

First off, I want as WHITE a light as possible, no yellow, I'd rather a hint of blue than yellow if I had to pick one. So I'm thinking 5000k, 35w. I don't want to blind people or get tickets (I live in NYC), I just want nice white/bluish headlights. Price is also an issue so I'm looking at DDM.

I'm still unclear: Do I need to order a harness? Canceler/error eliminator? From what I've read, I don't think I need either. But then I just started reading something about projectors? Will that help aim the lights or something?

Any advice on the cheapest yet most user-friendly kit I could buy would be appreciated. I'm like a total newbie to all this but I'm gonna try and put these in myself. I just wanna make sure I buy all the right things! :) Thanks so much
I have a 2008 sport and installed 5000 low & high beams and 3000 for my fog lights all through v-leds. They do come in the slim ballast and they look real good!

Where did you install the ballasts? I know there is PLENYY of space under the hood, I just want to get ideas. Thanks :thumb3:

right now i have it all sitting behind the head light assembly because its been too cold do tuck them away or mount them. but once the weather gets better out here I will get on that asap and most likely try to hide all the wiring somehow.

For the love of Pete! Just Google Kelvin color temperatures.

4300K is slightly yellow.
5000K is white.
6000K is slightly blue.

Three of many, many sources.

Now as to what is brighter?... According to Xenondepot their 4300K HID's are the brightest they sell.

OK I want to add my 2 cents in here.

First of all, we must understand that 4300K is a color on the Kelvin scale that has been used by OEM because it is the most lumen output that you can get out of an HID bulb. The OEM has gone with this color over a 5-6K range bulb is simply for the fact this is the brightest they can get the bulb. This has been set in stone and beaten on for years know. Most of us die hard HID guys will not stray from this.

Now for reference, daylight on a clear day at noon is measured at 6500K (and this varies by what articles you may read). In the middle of summer, I would say that would be pretty damn bright. A normal day hovers around 5500K.

Now I want to just throw a little twist in the world of OEM lighting. Take the new Mercedes Benz CLS (C218). This model will be the first MB to offer full LED lighting on one of their cars. The Kelvin of their headlights are rated at 5500K. Engineering documents on the car and it's lighting point out to the fact that with the LED technology, the engineers can more easily manipulate the LED bulb color to as close to daylight as possible while also being able to adjust the intensity. It also says that it found 5500K to be the perfect middle ground in whitest light and intensity (their research also refers to noon daylight as 6500K).

So to put in a 5-6K bulb is not a crime. 6K does start to get blue tint in them, but the light output is undeniably white. I've been there done that. To say they are purple simply is not true. The only thing one has to loose with proper HID lighting is Lumen output, but may feel they see better with a 5-6K bulb.

Any car that comes equipped with a factory installed HID system will use a 4100k-4300k bulb. This color temperature is going to be the brightest and will provide you with the highest lumen output.

If your main objective is to gain more light output and you want a stock HID look then go with a 4300k HID kit.

If you are more concerned with looks and you want your lights to have a lot of color and are not concerned with maximizing light output then go with a higher color temperature.

I ordered my kits from xenon depot. Headlights: 4300 Phillips Xtreme Kits. Fogs: 4300 Xtreme kits. IMO....AS WHITE AS CAN BE. I see a small difference in color when comparing the Phillips bulbs and the Xenon Depot's bulbs. Seems like Phillips are all white(no yellow) and XD's are white with just the slightest hint of blue depending on angle. Here are some pics:

Thanks for taking the time to post pictures of the Xtreme 4300k HID kits. You will find that the Xtreme Philips HID kit will color shift over time. Philips bulbs reach color temperatures of up to 4700k once they fully color shift.

I just put HIDs in my 06 about a month ago. After reading reviews extensively I went with this kit from Xenon Depot. Also I ordered the Phillips bulb (just a higher quality than the generic one).

Xtreme Digital HID Kits

The install is really straight forward which is good because the included directions definitely suck. Luckily, all the plugs will only connect one way. As far as being pure white, I went with 4300K it's actually really white with a tiny tinge of blue in there. I believe 4300K is the whitest, anything less and you'll start to get some yellow. Also, there is the "squirrel finder" mod if you search the forums but I thought it looked like a pain and chose to skip that step. The cutoff line looks pretty good and I haven't gotten flashed or stopped once. I'm also in a city (Washington DC) and people don't seem to notice so I wouldn't worry about being in NYC.

One more helpful tip that I would suggest is connecting your battery to a charger before you disconnect it. I did it and I didn't have to renormalize the windows and reprogram the radio and all that bs.
hey man, how long did it take you to install your HID kit, im in the DC area too and was looking for someone to install them but am thinking about trying to do it myself

SONIC: No flaming here. What constitutes whatever amount of Kelvin to whatever color is pretty much irreverent. Although I agree that putting on anything higher then 4300K is useless.

It's kind of hard to be taken as an authority when (a) you screw up a word that badly and (b) forget that this is exactly one of the questions being asked at the start of this thread.

Also, I think you ought to read Mike07SE's post if you want to come out of closed-minded land. K.C. - you may want to join CookieRoe in this endeavor.

2 months later.........captain english.......... diplomacy much???

Keith:
1) Welcome to a 2 month old thread that was basically over.
2) You criticize me over spelling? Really???? Ok, I meant to say irrelevant.
3) KC and MANY others are very knowledgeable on the subject of HID lighting. Look up the subject online and get back to us. (I can't help you if can't understand what we are trying to say)
4) Show me where I say I'm an authority on this. I've personally had 2 PnP kits and 1 retro. I can say I know about the subject, but not an authority.

Keith, this is a forum. A forum is where people come to ask questions and others chime to help out the person asking the question. If one gives misinformation or incomplete information, then others chime in to correct. Some get offended, others don't. Whatever. This isn't a pissing contest as much as you want it to be. If you don't believe or want to believe the advice of others, then ignore it. Otherwise forums would be pure chaos. Thanks for chiming in and attacking knowledgeable people (NOT including myself) who want to help. I see you're "new" with t4r.org.......... telling people with "seniority" on the forum they are basically full of it? Ok, good luck with that.

Duly noted.

That doesn't mean you aren't blinding anyone b/c you are. At least adjust them downward.

Sounds like you're trying to be an authority.

Sorry Buddy...5000k, 6000k and higher are a waste of time, so I didn't bother retaining the photos.

Cop out.

You mention that you and your wife see nothing wrong with "brightness" of your HIDs. Realize these opinions are SUBJECTIVE.

[...]

I'm on (PA) 476N/S everyday at night and can spot a plug n play HID kit miles away.

[...]

They look cool, yeah, but the main factor one gets HIDs SHOULD be for functionality not b/c "I gotta have what they have b/c its cool looking".

[...]

Judging by pictures posted isn't the right way to judge, but the glare does looks pretty bad. Just admit you are wrong about blinding other drivers, maybe not all of them.

[...]

Your admission of being [conscious] of glare is good, but you mess up by saying "it's not that bad".

Never said you thought you were an authority, granted.

I agree........... ignorance is bliss I guess..

Never once did he give an indication of ignorance. Like you said, he was conscious of the relevant issues.

I wasn't upset about anything. The argument was about color and Kelvins. I was only mentioning that projectors are BEST for HIDs. Many don't agree...............

peace out

Misrepresenting the discussion much? Also, you did come off a tad upset throughout (and right now, for that matter).

You know what? I'd rather stick up for newer members getting blasted and disrespected by "senior, knowledgeable" members for no good reason than pander to "forum gurus" acting this way. There are plenty of smart and experienced people on here that represent themselves well, are truly helpful, and don't engage in the very pissing contests that you egged on yet later condemned. Need I go on? Edit: Gotta call it like I see it, Cookie.

Edit: K.C.: this is mainly directed at CookieRoe at this point. It would have been right for you to admit you were mistaken on the colors, but that's all.

BLASTING new members? No, you read wrong, at least the tone of it. If we (and other members who have more than 1 year on the forum) were disrespecting new members, don't you think we would've been banned long ago??

Keith: The thread is over. Lots of misunderstandings. None of it involved you. The OP got his information. Move on. In the end, we are all here to help each other.

I'm done, I've said all I have to. Keep shredding me if you want.................

Fair enough. Just think about this: if I did read the tone wrong, imagine how it might have been read by lurkers, by sonic, by other members, etc. I doubt I'm alone. It might not have been "blasting" per se, but it was disrespectful and presumptuous at times. That's all I wanted to point out. The way I did it originally was wrong, but I had just finished reading the whole thread and couldn't refrain from saying something.
